Hull's third annual Grass Roots free festival will feature a dazzling line up of world music, dance and art in Pearson Park on bank holiday Sunday August 24th 2003, between 12 noon and 6.00 pm.
The main Grass Roots festival will be preceded by Grass Roots Central - an afternoon of acoustic entertainment, in association with Cottingham Live Music - in Queens Gardens on Saturday August 23rd 12.30 - 4.30 pm.

Pave and graf artists Mojo and Detour.


Grass Roots 2003 in Pearson Park will feature live music on the main stage, breakdance and DJs in the Full Flava marquee, Kurdish dance, graffiti art from the Vapour Festival 2003 and Mojo, Tads and Detour, plus didgeridoo, circus skills, poi, juggling and drum workshops for all the family.

Grass Roots has grown into a weekend festival in two city parks, following previous performances by top artists such as guitar virtuoso and singer songwriter Nick Harper, and OK Original Killer of No 1 hit rappers, Pied Piper Crew.

William Nowik

All the way from New York in association with BBC Raw talent, and especially for Grass Roots - storytelling anti-folk underground national steel buddha, William Nowik opens the show at 12 noon.

Mug Punter

Four piece rock 'n soul outfit playing hot hits 4 the ladies. Featuring Mad Jax B-lines, Archie's axe, Cagger's vox and Sheik's tubs. Twattin out modern day northern folk anthems down the Humber banks and bridging both sides plugging Humber estuary and smirkin at the seals - too loud for the Lamp. Modern day outcasts on the Barry tone trip. A genuine no nonce sound with no compromise - nothing is to true.


Pave

Fronted by Tom Ritchie whose previous band 3am were BBC Radio Raw Talent Band of the Year 2002, Pave are about to release their debut single in September and album early 2004.


Gul Naz

From Kurdistan, internationally acclaimed musicians playing traditional and contemporary Kurdish dance music.


Sam Pirt

BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winner 1999, Sam has been playing the accordion for eleven years, interpreting folk music from Spain, Denmark, Sweden, England and Scotland.


Maghribibeat

From Morocco via Hebden Bridge, Maghribibeat play rhythms and tunes for dancing. Based on Gnawi rhythms, drums are played for spiritual, emotional and physical health and as a celebration of family and life.

Full Flava Headliner

Last up on the main stage, the big hip-hop finale. A collaboration of open mic mc-ing over original material, breakdance performance and battle, featuring: Redlocz, OK, Unknown, Titanium Crew, Cause 'n' FX, Leeds DPA, Kingston B-Boyz & Girlz and the Original Human Beatbox.

Cause 'n' FX

Leeds based hip-hop band, recently performed live on Radio 1's XFM black radio station as part of the celebration of hip-hop culture week.


Titanium Crew

New young, Hull based, hip-hop, R 'n' B band will be performing a live PA of their latest tracks with the Full Flava Sound System. A definite one for the R 'n' B hip-hop headz.


OK Original Killer and Unknown MC

London based, Original Killer, part of the Pied Piper Crew with No.1 hit single "do you really like it?" and Unknown MC, aka Mr Pink, now debuting pre-release versions of up and coming "Stop the Violence" single. First came to notoriety under Hijack/Comanche Sly as being the first UK act to sign to Ice T's Rhyme Syndicate label. Originators and pioneers of UK Rap, basically the best UK hip-hop act.


Young Flava

From Spring Bank, Bransholme and Grimsby. Djs, MC's and breakers, recently training with Full Flava www.streetlifeworkshops.com over the last year, displaying talents through the decks and on the mics and floor. Young people performing live for you for the first time. Respect.


DJ Redlocz

Founder and member of Full Flava, Young Flava and Streetlife. Regularly delivering DJ, breakdance, graffiti and computer music workshops in Hull and throughout the North of England. Leading light of the Hull hip-hop scene. Give thanx.


Kingston B-Boyz and Girlz/Leeds Dance Perfection Associates

Hull based Breakdance and Body-Popping crew hold regular workshops promoting breakin' locally and nationally. Battling out today with the Leeds DPA Youth Break Dance Squad to the Full Flava Sound System.


In the Funkywormhole Sound System marquee

Guest DJs play reggae, funk and jungle.
