Food Reviews
Chinese Delight!
by Petra
As an amateur connoisseur of food I have died and gone to heaven by becoming the food and drink critic for www.thisisUll.com I want to give an honest view of eateries in Hull and let you know the worst and the best.

So I devised a cunning plan. Top places to nosh get a big fork up from me (ooooer) and those which are sadly lacking in quality and service get a big fork down.

Woke up this morning and had an overwhelming desire for Chinese so I decided to test out Wins,35 Spring Bank with my 10 year old son. They have a superb lunchtime offer - £2.50 for any main course minus fillet steak and duck dishes.

We were greeted with a big smile from Juan and a very large menu. Normal prices for the main courses range from £3.90 - £5.10.

Oliver chose sea food in mushrooms whilst I too, staying on the nautical theme, chose sea food in garlic.

The eating area downstairs is minimalist but perfectly adequate for a lunchtime jaunt. The food arrived promptly and we were both impressed by the size of the portions. The sea food (king prawns, squid and mussels) was plentiful and my garlic sauce would have kept any vampire from my door.

The vegetables were crunchy and I enjoyed it all.

In a word - Yum.

Oliver described his as delicious but his sauce seemed more Bisto than Beijing. However, the quality of food for the price is excellent.

Smoking is allowed - ashtrays on request. I confess I probably single handedly perpetuate the tobacco industry. Mr Gallagher is my best friend.

So a definite forks up for Wins. I will return and let them chow my mein.

Food Reviews - Thai House by Allen Miles
Last Friday after leaving Mo to do his thing at the Waterstones "Is Hull Really Crap?" debate, I was fortunate enough to indulge in an evening's dining for two at the Thai House restaurant on Princes Ave. Read more...

Food Reviews - Pizza Planet Plummets! by Petra
Moving further up Spring Bank I recently frequented Pizza Planet - a Pizza/Kebab/Burger/Fried Chicken etc etc take-away. Top Tip- I shouldn't have bothered. My cheeseburger was bland to say the least - the succulent tasting stick certainly wasn't hitting Read more...

Cooking - Chicken Curry by Anne
We have spent most of the week-end at the WOMAD festival in Reading. We spent loads of money on food which was a bit disappointing and when we got home we thought it might be nice to try to make something like a WOMAD curry. This is a really gorgeous curry Read more...

People - Wreckless Eric - Some sort of biography
By Eric Goulden / Wreckless Eric 2004
I know I should play the game but I don't want to. I know how it works - you click on the snazzy button that says biography and straight away you've got a potted history of me that you can use to write your article or base your interview questions on. You whiz through it and on the day you can ask: How many years have you been in Read more...

Places to Visit - Our Samhain Visit to Avebury by Janie Spencer
Before we start on our journey, let me give you a bit of background on Avebury. It is a beautiful stone circle, so big that you can in fact fit a village inside it, as you can see from this overhead map! As well as being a tourist spot, it is both a home and a gathering Read more...

Humour - Good Diet Conclusion
Here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies. 1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. 2. The French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. 3. The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heartattacks than the British or Americans. Read more...

Aircraft and Airshows - Concorde by Tony
On Friday 24th October 2003 the last fight of Concorde by British Airways as a fare paying passenger aircraft took place. If you have flown on Concorde or have seen it in flight, you can understand what a great loss this will be to the nation. The aircraft, first airborne in 1969, was and is still out in front in design and technical innovation.    Read more...

Reviews, Books - A Friend of the Family by Lisa Jewell
By Darren Sant
This book is a tale of the trials and tribulations of three brothers. The brothers are suffering from differing problems and there lives are not at present on the right track. Jewell's novels are accurately described as pop fiction but don't let that put you off. The characters are believably written and there is a high degree of what I can only call emotional depth to them.

Reviews, Theatre - Emily Brontė's Wuthering Heights
Adapted by John Godber, Hull Truck Theatre 09/10/03
By E.M.X. Creek
I went to this production with some apprehension. I am not a huge Brontė fan, and in addition had some doubts as to how well Wuthering Heights would adapt for our modest location. I am happy to say that the result was remarkably good.

Music Reviews - Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band. By Brian
The bottom line; Mad Crowd Disease is a punk band. They don't claim to be anything else. Don't want to be anything else. Off stage, Cal, Danny and Gaz are pleasant enough young men, on stage however, they seem to transform, Hyde-like, into aggressive noise merchants, peddling their own brand of punk. Read more...

Music Reviews- The Levellers, The Mutts & 59 Violets at Hull City Hall - 29th March 04 By Steve Rudd
The Levellers have to be applauded for consistently inviting some brilliant bands to support them on tour. Back in December 2003, Brighton rockabilly outfit She Said did the honours brilliantly, and this time around - for their 14-date, Anti-Apathy UK Spring 2004 tour Read more...
