Marrakech Ave Restaurant, Princes Avenue
By Ibi Alaiyemola
Saturday 6th October 2007
|
Previously Ceasers delicatessen, it has had a refurb and is now a restaurant
with an eastern feel in the decor.
I have visited a few times with family and other friends too had enjoyed
themselves there when it first reopened so for a friend's birthday a group
of seven of us booked a table for 9pm, had a few drinks in the bars and were
all ready for a great meal.
|
|
|
We got seated, ordered wine and champagne off the list. No champagne but they had sparkling wine. After half an hour we asked if we could see a menu, to be told that there were none available at the moment. After 50 minutes of being there the menus finally came, and orders were placed ... No starter arrived.
|
|
So at 10.20 I stopped a waiter and asked, 'Do you think we could actually get something to eat at some point please?' His response was, 'I'll find out for you.' So he went to find our waitress and the food then came immediately.
The portions were minute in comparison to previous visits and every one of us had practically wiped the plate clean with the half pitta bread each that starters came with. The food was nice but in a short time the standards have slipped massively. A starter of beef tomato slices with mozzarella was really your average salad tomato - 3 slices of one!
|
The vegetarian option of an aubergine salad is delicious and probably the signature dish of the restaurant but the rest left little to the imagination. Falafel 'balls' were like Aunt Bessies stuffing balls cut in half and the garlic sauce that was served with the King Prawn Royale dish was pungent but not due to any garlic or fish smells. So we finished and 20 minutes later decided that we would clear our own plates up as nobody else seemed to want to.
A bottle of sparkling wine was set down on the table and two minutes later, the fastest response from staff took place when they realised they had put it on the wrong table and swiftly took it back!
|
|
|
The place wasn't even at maximum capacity yet the staff were rushed off their feet and seemed unable to cope with simple requests. The girl working on the reception came and took our plates away and we said how unimpressed we all were to which she said 'I'm sorry, I'm going mad here too'.
People from other parties could be heard to say, 'well if we actually get to eat here ...' and at 11.15, a group discussion and still no main course, we decided to pay for what we had to eat and drink (they were lucky we were so civil about doing that) and leave.
|
|
A waiter held the door and wished us goodnight. Then a chef who I think is the owner came running out. 'Well don't come back' he said to the last to exit. No worries there - we won't!

Food and Drink - Chill, Newland Avenue By Michael Code
|
|
"Oh my God, those dogs looked so real!" - you will hear everyone squeal when they
first walk into Chill, which used to be known as The Hub.
With its funky chairs and bohemian layout at the entrance, you'd be forgiven if
you think that this place is one of the many coffee houses that litter the streets
of Newland Avenue, but it isn't.
Walking a bit further

Dropping something off at a friend's one morning I finally decided to try the 'little sister'

Long an admirer of this building when it was a butchers, I had taken an interest in the conversion but never got around to eating there.
The full breakfast was ordered and a cup of herbal tea. Despite the weather I decided to sit outside,

Food and Drink - Sleepers Bar, Newland Avenue By Fiona Carr

Recently under new ownership this has gone from a shaky start as one of the first
cafe bars on Newland, rather than the already chi chi Princes Ave, to an
established favourite for the discerning.
On a whim, my somewhat dizzy companion and I just turned up for a mulled wine.
It was buzzing with a loud but not aggressively so level

Food and Drink - Revolution Reviewed by Matthew Wilson

After seeing the 15 minute promise posters in the window of Revolution every day for a couple of weeks, I decided to go in and put them to the test. The deal is, if your food takes longer than 15 minutes from when you order to when it appears on your table, you get it for free. So upon entering, my wife and I were told by a friendly young lady to take a seat.
She came

Date 25th November. Party of 14. Table for 8pm.
When we turned up it was very busy.
Our table had been put in the corner next to the cooking area.
We did not have enough tables, I had to sit on the corner of a table and eat my starter.
It was not until I spoke to the Manager that they increased our tables by 1.
He told me; all you had to do was ASK!
Because we were a large number
