Complicity Part 1 (4/5)
By Nick Quantrill
(1/5), (2/5), (3/5), (4/5), (5/5).

McCormack ran his hand through his hair and sat back.
'Fair comment Richard. It's a difficult situation. It's going to be awkward to secure a conviction. Yet we have to be seen to be doing all that we can. Laura Fry was just an ordinary teenager. Her father works for Smith and Nephew, her mother is a part-time accounts clerk, while Laura herself was a sixth-form student looking to go to university next summer. Without being vulgar Richard, these are the kind of people who decide whether or not we're doing a decent job.'

McCormack glanced at the photograph on his desk. Coleman followed his eyes.
'I've got two teenage daughters myself'.
Coleman nodded. He thought about his son. Although still a child, he was worried about him getting involved with drugs. As a policeman, it felt like he was fighting a losing battle.
'What have we got so far then, Richard?'
'We know of two dealers who where in the city centre at the same time as Laura. So far we've picked one up, Ryan Stutt. DC Maynard is interviewing him now. As yet, Carl Baker hasn't surfaced but we'll bring him in as soon as we can. I've had someone visit his known addresses, but they've drawn a blank so far.'
'Good. That's a start. Have we got a handle on who these characters are working for?
'Stutt and Baker are very much street operators. Both are well known to the Drugs Squad and have previous convictions as well as links to wider organisations. So far, nothing has been made to stick to those higher up the chain.'
'I've been reviewing the intelligence regarding drugs in the city centre and it's a worrying picture Richard. As you know, this last month has seen a significant increase in arrests for both possession and intent to supply'.

Coleman nodded. 'Nobody wants that. I'm liaising with DS Brown from the Drugs Squad, under the supervision of DI Neil Holloway, to work up a plan of attack on the known dealers around the nightclubs. Hopefully that'll give us a line into their bosses. He's happy for Maynard and myself to oversee the initial interviews.'
'So I understand, but at the moment a clampdown on the actual dealers must take priority. I've spoken to Neil today and authorised him the necessary resources to expedite the situation.'
Coleman thought about the other equally pressing caseloads on his desk that would have to be accommodated elsewhere. Clearly, McCormack was intent on playing to the public gallery on this one. He couldn't afford for any stone to be left unturned in the search for the individual who sold Laura Fry the fatal tablet.

'I also want a CID presence on this, so I expect you to work together so we all get the result that we want. It goes without saying that drugs are only the tip of the criminal iceberg. Neil is expecting you in his office straight after we finish here to confirm our strategy once you're through with your interviewing.'
'With respect Sir, it's going to be extremely difficult to secure a worthwhile conviction out of this'.
'You don't think punishing the person who killed Laura to be worthwhile?'
'That's not what I'm saying at all' he replied getting the picture.
'Glad to hear it, Richard. This operation is not only about removing dangerous criminals from the streets of our city, it's also about reassuring the public and wider audiences that we are proactive in doing so.'

Coleman nodded. McCormack obviously had one eye on receiving a kind word in dispatches from the Home Secretary for both himself and the top brass in the war against drugs; ever the smooth political operator. It was all bullshit. The order had obviously come from higher up and he wasn't certain that McCormack believed it any more than he did.

Aircraft and Airshows - Saturday 10th September - The 65th Battle of Britain Anniversary Air Show - Duxford 2005 By Tony
This is The Big One, Duxford Airshow, paying tribute to Churchill's Few, commemorating this anniversary of Britain's Finest Hour. In the summer of 1940 pilots of the RAF engaged hostile air forces and drove them from our skies. Credit must also be attributed to the aircraft of the time, Hurricanes and Spitfires. As time goes by, the number of these heroic pilots who flew Read more...

Aircraft and Airshows - The Yorkshire Airshow - Elvington 2005 By Tony
This is my sixth visit to this airshow and one I don't like to miss. The airfield creates an atmosphere that transports you back to the WWII days when it was a base for the heavy bombers. The resident squadron 1942 till May 1944 was 77 Squadron RAF, flying the twin-engine Whitley bomber, soon to be replaced by Handley Page Halifax with four Read more...

Aircraft and Airshows - The Yorkshire Airshow - Elvington 2004 By Rachael
On 21st August 2004 I took to the rails at 5.30am bound for Hull. The reason? Elvington Yorkshire Airshow. Traveling with anticipation of how the day was going to unfold; my last experience being sat in the pouring rain at Waddington, I thought what aircraft I was going to see, a Harrier? Tornado? Spitfire? Read more...

Aircraft and Airshows - The Shuttleworth Collection - Military Pageant Air Display - 1st August 2004 By Tony
I can only say that this was without doubt one of the most enjoyable events I have visited over the years. Not so much a flying display as a nostalgic happening. The mood was set as I arrived to hear 17 members of the James Goff Big Band playing a selection of tunes from the 1930's Read more...

Aircraft and Airshows - Waddington International Airshow - June 26th and 27th 2004 By Tony
I travelled to the Airshow with trepidation, as the weather forecast was for cloud and rain and the prospect of no flying loomed large. But here we are and all worries regarding the forecast were forgotten as I entered this hive of activity. As all aircraft/Airshow enthusiasts know, the noise and smell of fuel excites the senses and one hurries Read more...

Aircraft and Airshows - Philately - Concorde Stamps By Tony
I'm a philatelist. In these modern times, that's like being a ballroom dancer on a skateboard ramp, a bit embarrassing. Over the years I've been a collector of aircraft stamps and have now around 4,000 stamps dating from 1922 to the present day. I've selected some of the stamps featuring Concorde to show the wide range of countries who felt the need to show this fantastic aircraft. Read more...

Aircraft and Airshows - Concorde by Tony
On Friday 24th October 2003 the last fight of Concorde by British Airways as a fare paying passenger aircraft took place. If you have flown on Concorde or have seen it in flight, you can understand what a great loss this will be to the nation. The aircraft, first airborne in 1969, was and is still out in front in design and technical innovation.    Read more...

Art Gallery - By Local Artist Patrick Henry
