'Time for me to go and see the boss. I'll give you a shout when we're through. Have we interviewed anybody yet who may have been dealing last night in the centre?' 'Just about to do that. West and myself are making a start with Ryan Stutt. We'll see what he has to say about his movements last night.' Coleman stood up and threw the local newspaper in the waste bin. 'Right. Let's see what that brings.' Stutt was well known to them. Despite being only 19 years old, he had a substantial criminal record and had already served time in prison.

His background was the archetypal story that the police heard. He was brought up with low aspirations; poor education, poor upbringing and the opportunity to be led by bad influences, had all contributed to him being marked down for a life in low-level crime from his early teens. Coleman and Maynard left the office in the corner of the CID room and headed down the stairs towards the ground floor of the building. The walls were littered with glossy posters, but the stench of institutionalisation hung heavy. It'd take more than a coat of paint to cover over the old-fashioned and outdated station. Coleman and Maynard made their way through the reception area and down the corridor towards where the interview rooms were located. They were just in time to see the handcuffed Stutt limping heavily into an interview room. 'Hurt yourself playing football, did you Ryan?' shouted Coleman down the corridor. 'Summat like that.' 'Just remember Ryan, while you're with Detective Constable Maynard here - the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.'

Chapter 2

Coleman knocked and entered the room. 'Come on in' said McCormack somewhat rhetorically. He nodded and sat down. McCormack looked every bit of his fifty or so years. Now the that the force were utilising smaller operational units, Major Investigation Teams, that were designed to respond more speedily to major incidents, it only served to place more pressure on the officers involved. 'I assume you've seen the newspaper today.

It's going to be a sensitive subject and one that we simply have to handle correctly.' Laura Fry had been pronounced dead less than 24 hours ago at Hull Royal Infirmary. The post-mortem confirmed that she had died of water intoxication. Excessive water levels leading to pressure being exerted onto her brain, caused a coma and ultimately death within hours of her admission. Although still awaiting official confirmation, the trigger for the water intoxication was likely to be the result of a single ecstasy tablet. 'It would have been, shall we say, more professional of the local media to wait until we could say with some certainty what the cause of death was' said McCormack. 'Probably a little too much to hope, and with respect sir, it's going to be cut and dried.'
