Coleman got out of McCormack's car and looked up. The eerie silence of the non-match-day stadium made it seem all the more imposing and magnificent; all perfect angles, slopes and curves. Coleman still considered it somewhat unreal that the city had such a magnificent facility. It was as if someone had stolen it from Leeds or Sheffield and placed it down on West Park for Hull's sports teams to use. Although he still yearned for the collective spirit that you found on the ramshackle terraces of Boothferry Park, it was churlish to complain too much.

During the journey he had brought McCormack up to date with his interview with Brendan Lock, explaining that the weight of what he had done was just too great to bear and that Lock had subsequently confessed to the murder of Ray Baxter. McCormack locked his car and they made their way around the concourse towards the entrance to the conference facilities in silence. The policemen slipped quietly into chairs at the back of the room to listen to the speakers' debate the sundry methods available to tackle the drugs problem in the city.

Coleman scanned the room to see if he recognised any familiar faces. Although he was largely sympathetic to their situation, he wasn't listening too closely. The solutions they were offering didn't sound overly practical to him. He glanced at McCormack who appeared to be listening intently. Maybe he was, or maybe McCormack's poker-face was better than he gave him credit for. As he continued to scan the room he spotted something of value, a neatly arranged selection of biscuits being brought into the room on a tray along with coffee. At least the coffee should be good.

'How nice to see you again, Inspector' said Gale warmly shaking him by the hand. 'Excellent work, Simon. There are some very interesting ideas being discussed.' 'Thank you. We'll have to discuss them ourselves at some point in the near future ... Sergeant Coleman ...' he said turning in his direction, 'this is a surprise.'

Coleman smiled at him. 'I thought I should come along. It was rude of me to leave the meeting yesterday like I did. I've talked it over with DI McCormack and I'd like to apologise. I hope that you can give me another opportunity to see what your project is all about.' 'That's very gracious of you, Richard. In that case, it'll be my pleasure to answer any questions that you may have.' 'We do have one or two, Simon' said Coleman as he guided him to the corner of the room. McCormack drifted away to make small talk with some of the other delegates.

'Have you made any progress in relation to the death of Laura Fry? I understand from David Peel that you were on high visibility patrol in the city centre last night. Did anything crawl out from under its stone...so to speak.' 'No' said Coleman shaking his head. 'I suppose once word gets around, as it inevitably does, any dealers in the area would probably move along and give the area a miss for the night.' 'Hmm...I suppose that's probably correct.'
