It existed; it really existed. This fact alone was exciting but what if it wasn't coming to Hull? I still felt frustrated. My head dropped. The door to the schoolrooms opened and one of the older girls appeared ringing a hand bell to tell us playtime was over. 'Off to your classroom, boys,' Mr Jason ordered but it was not the harsh, no questions ordering of Jolly Rodgers and the other adults. It sounded more like advice than an order. In an instant I wished he were our teacher.

Many times over the years I have reflected and wondered whether the decisions I was about to make would have been different if all the adults in charge at the home had shared Mr Jason's nature. 'I will see if I can find out something about Buffalo Bill.' His words almost stopped me in my tracks. Apart from Mrs G, he was the first adult in my whole time in the orphanage to show me a friendly act and for a long time before then. 'Thank you, sir,' George and I mumbled in unison. For the first time in two years I really meant thank you, apart from when I said it to Mrs G, of course.
