Scarrot crunched the gears of the lorry and manoeuvred it in gingerly. The lads pulled back the tarpaulin and moved an industrial trolley to the rear of the tail place of the lorry as it crashed down. Crockford watched and slowly nodded his head and turned to Tommy Mulgrew; 'They will be here in a bit, Mr Mulgrew.'
|
|
Mulgrew looked around and seemed to be indifferent to all that was happening around him. His sheepskin coat was turned up and his physique seemed to suggest he was above the skulduggery that was about to unfold. The trolley was loaded with four crates and for the life of Mick this seemed a very strange cargo of liqueur. Very, very heavy and very small. Wally Fear asked out loud the obvious.
'This isn't Scotch, and if we're hanlin' alcohol I'm a Dutchman'.
'Shut it Wall. For £10 we weren't expectin' to move some boxes of ale were we?'
|
|
Doug Revie furtively looked over to Tommy Mulgrew and then at Brian Crockford.
'You can see Tom has a revolver, so we are in the clear whatever is happening, believe me.'
Scarrot had lit a brazier and the lads stood around it, and a kerosene lamp was lit which illuminated the warehouse and flickered. Morris strolled over and broke open a packet of Luckies.
|
'So now what man? We are waiting for what, man?'
Crockford looked over and said 'I'm expecting to deliver in about 30 minutes.'
This left all none the wiser and the mood was flat.
|
'Good evening to you all.'
The voice that rang out was a cheap and fruity brogue as if from a music hall. A small dapper man with eyes that shone with a little madness moved into the light.
'Ah. O'Riordan. Have you been waiting for us back there?'
'Well you have to wait somewhere, and you did say midnight was the moment to meet.'
He strolled over to the trolley and Tommy Mulgrew moved across as if to clearly present himself as the main authority in the transaction.
|
|
'Ah. Now then, you must be Mulgrew.'
'You've heard of me?'
'I've heard of you.'
'What have you heard?'
The question hung in the air. In this moment the positions were set. With a false smile the Irishman continued but looked at Mulgrew as he spoke.
'Well me fine boys, what have we here for your Uncle Seamus?'
