"I'm sorry," says Natasha, gesturing to her friend, "it doesn't look like I'll be needing..." "I know," I interrupt, shrugging my shoulders and smiling resignedly. "It's a shame," she says. "I know," I say again. "Maybe we'll run in to each other again," she says, "I mean if you're on the road a lot and I'm out and about with Friends Of The Animals most weekends.

There's only so many service stations..." she trails off, probably noticing the dejection in my face, my demeanour, "oh well, see you around, Steve," she says, extending her hand across the table to gently touch the back of mine and as she does, I swear I feel a tiny surge of electricity that pulses up the length of my middle finger, my arm, across my chest to my heart. And then she's gone. As I leave the restaurant I pass Natasha and her friends but though I notice her trying to catch my attention, I cannot look at her 'cause if I do I know I will cry.

Outside it's still raining and there's a crack of thunder. I stand outside the door and stare up in to the rain, letting it shower my face, running down my neck and underneath my clothes, soaking me and I don't care how cold my fleece is getting, my jeans sticking to my legs. Finally I look at my watch and sigh, and I take the phone out of my pocket and switch it back on. Already there are five missed calls and a couple of text messages, and I'm about to dial my home number when Natasha and her friends come out with assorted Styrofoam cups, no food bags. I try not to look at Natasha but she tells her friend to go on ahead she'll be along in a minute and she comes over to me.

"Thanks for the offer of the lift Paul, I really do appreciate it. I knew you were a good bloke you know." "A suitable bloke," I say. "That's right," she says and then staring into my eyes she whispers, "A most suitable bloke." And she takes the back of my head and pulls it to hers and kisses me full on the lips and I don't taste the nicotine as I know I should, as I have when I've kissed smokers in the past, I just taste the lovely sweet wetness of the inside of her mouth and as she finally withdraws she runs her tongue along my front teeth and it sends a shiver down the back of my neck.

She walks backwards a few paces and then as she's turning away from me she gives me another of her lightening smiles and a wink of her gorgeous emerald eyes and she says, "See you."

I follow her out across the car park and when she gets to her friend's car and I get to mine I wave goodbye to her, and in the instant that she flicks back her hair before getting in to her friends car I know that I could have and should have and would have. I start to drive out of the car park, but as I do I draw alongside a litter bin and lower the driver's side window, and I drop the mobile phone in to the bin, then I get back on to the motorway and start driving up North to junction 31 where I pull off and swing around the roundabout and take the southbound carriageway.
