Buried In The Past (5/7)

He tries to turn away, but I hold his head so he can't move it. I put my finger to my lips and say, "Shhhhh...listen. I'm going to take the gag off now. But you have to stay quiet. If you start shouting and screaming, I'll pull your head off like a bottle-cap."
I start squeezing his skull until his eyes go wide and he screams behind his gag. "Do I make myself clear?" He nods, so I tear the cloth from his mouth.

"Look, just take what you want and get the fuck out of my house," he blurts out.
I pace up and down in front of him, and then I say, "You've got nothing I want."
I can smell the sweat running down his back, the urine that has leaked into his pants.
He's a big man, but he's frightened now. "Please, I think you've made a mistake," Jason says. "I don't know who you are. If you leave now, I won't tell anyone you've been here. I've got money upstairs in my bedroom, you can have it, just help yourself."

I rush towards him and grab his jaw, and then I put my face close to his and say, "You're not listening, Jason, I don't want your money. I just want you to recognise me." His eyes dart around, scanning my face, desperately trying to find something familiar. And then something clicks inside his head. "It...can't be," he says.
"It's been a long time, but I knew I could get you to remember somehow," I say, stepping back away from him.
"Mike? Mike Gilroy?"
"That's right, Jason. Aren't you pleased to see me?"
"But you're fuckin' dead!" he shouts. "Mike Gilroy went missing over twenty years ago."

"Yeah, I know. On a school trip wasn't it? A week in Bickley forest; you all woke up one morning and he was gone. The teachers went looking for him and then a search was organised and but he was never found, blah, blah, blah...well here I am, mystery solved. I'm back."
"You sick fuckin' bastard, who the fuck are you, what's this about?"
"I know, I know, it's all very hard to believe. So how can I prove it?" I say, stroking my chin. My act is really corny, but I can't help hamming it up. I may as well make a meal of this moment, so to speak. "Well, how about something that only you, your mates and Mike would know about?"

"I don't know who you are, but when I get out of this, I'm gonna fuckin' kill you," he says. "That's more like it," I say, patting his head. "That's the Jason I know. That's the Jason who dragged me out into the forest in the middle of the night with his mates. That's the Jason who tied me to a tree and left me alone in the dark, screaming and crying."
The blood drains from his face. He tries to say something, but it just comes out as an incoherent babble. "But I'm guessing that you never told the teachers that. I'm guessing you thought I'd turn up, that they'd eventually find me alive somewhere."

"We all looked for you," he says, shaking his head. "The teachers, the police, everybody...I swear, we looked, but you'd gone. You just disappeared. I'm sorry, please, I'm sorry. I don't understand what's happening. I mean, why haven't you got any older? Where the fuck have you been all this time?"
