Better accommodation is slightly questionable when it comes in the form of the English seaside beach hut. Yet, no electricity, and running water for only half the year, does not put hardcore English holidaymakers off. Over the New Years holidays Alan and Valerie Day queued, like no English queuer has queued before (In a car, in Dorset, in the cold for four days).
Their ultimate goal was a wooden beach hut, priced at an impressive £750 per year.
Their holiday home only contains a wooden table and cupboard, who wants to go to
Spain when you can come here? beamed Valerie.

It's true, the English holiday does have numerous benefits, no worry about sun burn from the blazing English sun, travel sickness is kept to a minimum, and no confusing language barriers means ordering off the menu is a doddle.
Traditional Lord and Lady Fashionista would not be complete without proper English attire.
The ideal English gent has always been pressed and tailored from top to toe.
This is not an outdated notion either, walk into Borders and amongst the new man
magazines pick up a copy of The Chaps magazine, a complete read for the discerning chap about town.

Places to go, what to wear, and articles from other like-minded individuals, it is so much more refined than the garish glossies.
|
|
The place for these chaps to get suited and booted is undoubtedly Savile Row.
Oswald Boateng, who is widely credited with introducing Savile Row tailoring to a
new generation, has coined the term bespoke couturier.
The tailoring rules he lives by such as do polish your shoes, wear well-ironed shirts,
show a bit of shirt cuff from under your jacket, and don't wear ill-fitting suits have
always been good enough for his clients, English legends David Bowie and Mick Jagger
and were recently seen on the catwalk for spring/summer 2006.

Lady Fashionista has also begun to abide by these conventions, with newly Englishified
Madonna leading the way in her flat cap and tweed jacket. It has never been so cool to appear as if one is just about to go hunting/riding, or is about to do some gardening in their country estate/farm.
So, is it this Britishness, a mix of traditional foods, pastimes and lifestyle choices that
Gordon Brown is so keen on us celebrating?
The French have it with Bastille Day, the Americans have it, most countries actually
have a national day and I think it's probably time that we do too. I would agree,
our English heritage has long been scorned at, as unrefined and unstylish; bring on a
Best of British day.

In conclusion, don't feel confused or outdated when it feels so right to dig out those wellies, pop on that wax jacket, go for a country stroll, and pop into the nearest Tea Shoppe. Stand in that queue, whilst waiting for your Earl Grey and scones, feeling proud to be a true, new traditionalist Brit.
