An A-Z list of different drugs and what they do (page 3)
By Bobbie Morgan
|
|
Rohypnol (Brand name for Flunitrazepam)
|
Also known as: 'The date rape drug', roofies, R2.
What is it?: depressant and tranquilliser. It is 7-10 times greater in strength than valium.
|
|
What does it look like?: this drug is tasteless, odourless and sometimes colourless so it can therefore be added to drinks without knowledge. This drug is usually in the shape of a purple diamond and has the word 'Roche' engraved in a horizontal grove across the front of the tablet. The figures 1 and 2 are also encircled on the back side of the tablet.
How is it used?: ingested orally, chewed, dissolved under the tongue, crushed, snorted, dissolved in liquid, injected and smoked.
The effects:
Psychological: this drug slows psychometric responses and lowers inhibitions. It can also induce a 'drunken' state, hallucinations and can cause severe disorientation.
Short term: synergistic effect with alcohol and enhances the effects of other drugs. The effects usually begin 20-30 minutes after ingesting and last for about 8 hours.
Long term: physical dependence.
|
Legal facts
-
This drug is not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
-
Evidence of supply could be used to prove other offences, ie. Indecent assault or rape.
|
Also known as: barbs, sleepers, downers, Seconal, Amytal, Nembutal, Tuinal.
What is it?: depressant and synthetic drug.
What does it look like?: found as white or coloured tablets or capsules.
|
|
How is it used?: this drug is usually swallowed, though it can be injected.
The effects:
Psychological: this drug causes relief from tension and anxiety, leads to poor control of the body (speech and feelings), and to physical and psychological dependence. Because barbiturates are a sedative drug they slow down the central nervous system in a similar way to alcohol.
Short term: a small dose can cause relaxation and sometimes promote sleep. A moderate to high dose can cause confusion. Users are at high risk of episodes of disturbed or violent behaviour. Abscesses can occur if injected and chest infections can occur through the suppression of the cough reflex. This drug also causes gross intoxication, a staggering gait and slurred speech.
Long term: A moderate to large dose can cause breathing failure which can lead to sudden death. Sudden withdrawal can also be fatal. There is a high risk of overdose because a lethal dose is quite close to the normal dose level. Other long term effects may include incontinence, risk of delirium, coma and fits.

Articles - A LIFE OR DEATH CHOICE
|
|
By Jim
I knew that I had to stop smoking. I had known it for a very long time. I am often in contact with people who are vulnerable and impressionable, yet there I was, influencing them to follow a path which I knew to be a totally destructive one.

Music Reviews - Die for, Silence in the Streets, Mourning Wood -
Adelphi 23rd December By Marcus Lewis
|
|
I, like many others, began the night with disappointment at the news that The Freaks Union were unavailable to play, after being on the bill.
However, it was two days before Christmas and I was determined to have my drinks and enjoy some live talent.
I understood the bulk of the bands were ..

Music Reviews - SIT UP and Listen to Riley by Cilla
|
|
Dave Robertson, Riley song writer has a way with words. You can just hear a ghost of a twang of his Liverpudlian accent come through.
Just enough to melt one or two hearts, I suspect. And the tunes? Well, I can't stop listening. They stick in your brain.
Sit Up, the single from their new EP is, to me, their most memorable song.
The lyrics are simple; like the Sunday morning when you woke up ..

Music Reviews - Miss Black America at the Adelphi Wednesday 10th December
By Cilla
|
|
I was as always, in a blind panic - half an hour to get ready (unheard of - and a girl my age needs time to apply the slap!) - late news that Miss Black America were playing at the Adelphi - tonight - the band that apparently John Peel (my hero) had heralded as 'the next big thing' ... and the batteries for the camera still hadn't recharged from the its last outing ....
Late again, but the Adelphi was really heaving - obviously more people read the Daily Mail..

Music Reviews - Shindigg/Silence in the Streets/Build Up to Nothing/Killer of Saints/The Flatmates
Adelphi, Hull
|
|
by Eammon Chirdlich - Sunday 30th Nov.
I arrived at the Adelphi with some trepidation - an afternoon of live music with five bands, only one of which I'd seen live before and from their names, it sounded like a real mixed bag. Nevertheless, I paid my three pounds and prepared..
