Oak Leaf Gathering (or Carry On Pagan) continued
By Rich Mills

|
The evening ended with Sam and I watching the Tea Pot Challenge next to the Old Boiler.
Which went something like this.. Tea Pot full of mead, a willing contestant,
the crowd count to 10, and if the contestant can last until the count then they've survived
the Tea Pot Challenge. It was as simple as that. What a laugh!
Sunday was another day that started over-cast but turned out to be a roasting hot
summers day by the afternoon. Much the same as Saturday, Sunday had one main difference.

|
The building of the Wicker Man, for the ritual burning late that evening.
In the early evening he was ready, standing a good 4 metres or more, he stood erect
over the gathering crowd.
People had been writing wishes on small pieces of paper and sticking them inside him.
After being paraded around the camp, he was set alight.
|
People cheered, people sang, some danced while others played drums.
Let the party begin! Sam and I got a good evening to ourselves, as the weekend
had wiped Eve out, and she crashed out before it got dark. So down to the Old Boiler
to try their various lethal potions, and then to bed, a little drunk and very happy.
Monday, and time to pack-up camp until next year.
My first ever gathering but not to be my last. I'd do it all again tomorrow.

Going Down - Cannabis March to smoky bears picnic in Pearson Park By Carl Wagner
|
|
The bullying nature of the so called war on drugs makes it difficult for many people to even voice an opinion on cannabis, so well done to the 100 or so that turned up for the 4th annual cannabis protest march.
The march left Queens Gardens at 1.00 pm with a police escort, and noisily worked its' way through the city centre

Going Down - Rain Didn't Stop Voices In Play By Rich Mills
|
|
I awoke this morning to a miserable day. Quite depressing after all the glorious sun we've had lately. More so because today was to be a large out-door event organised by community activists Voices In Play.
It's A Community Knockout, supposed to be held at Princess

Going Down - An EveningWith The Dark Poet - Bill Hicks Anniversary Tribute At the Adelphi By Rich Mills
|
|
It seems strange to be doing a review of Bill Hicks ten years after his death from pancreatic cancer. On 26th of February 1994, the world became a darker place.
However, a legacy of words that has resonated across the years, shows that the man who described himself as a dark poet was a shining light.
A genius with a razor sharp wit, who never compromised, and only spoke the truth!

Going Down - Hit And Run Poetry By Rich Mills
|
|
Well the Renegades have been at it again. Sunday night, as the rest of the world took in the news of Saddam's capture, the Renegade Writers stormed the Jaz Bar in Lowgate, Hull. Now feelings would be mixed, I'm sure, as to whether they went down a storm or like a lead balloon. One thing is for certain - the quiet Sunday audience were not prepared for the Renegades onslaught.

Going Down - Got to pick a Poet or Two by Mo.
|
|
Last night I accompanied Jane from the Renegade writers to Nellies Pub in Beverley to what turned out to be a terrific night of competitive poetry readings.
Ten years ago I'd be ribbed and teased.
My mates would have said "you're going soft" to have spent the evening in front of a roaring fire listening to poetry in one of the oldest pubs in England. .

Going Down - Celebrations of Eid al-Fitr
|
|
This evening (29th Nov) I was invited out by Adelat a Kurdish friend to take part in the local celebrations of Eid al-Fitr marking the Breaking of the Ramadan Fast.
We met up in one of the only two Kurdish restaurants in Hull, where I found him tucking into chicken and rice dinner alongside several other Kurdish friends.
