Hit And Run Poetry By Rich Mills

Well the Renegades have been at it again. Sunday night, as the rest of the world took in the news of Saddam's capture, the Renegade Writers stormed the Jaz Bar in Lowgate, Hull. Now feelings would be mixed, I'm sure, as to whether they went down a storm or like a lead balloon. One thing is for certain - the quiet Sunday audience were not prepared for the Renegades onslaught. With the usual mix of cutting-edge contemporary poetry and social commentary, the Renegades had an air of mischief about them, fuelled by the general apathy that we've come to expect in a Hull audience.

Pushing the limits of taste and decency; this was 'hit and run' poetry at its best. The 'don't give a f**k' attitude shone through, and the audience was left reeling as Renegade after Renegade got up and did their bit. This was all part of a new 'open mic' night that the Jaz Bar has started on a Sunday night. The Renegades are booked to do another session on Sunday the 21st, whether they'll be censored next time is probably up for debate.

However you can't keep a good poet down, and whether the Jaz Bar has recovered sufficiently to stand another onslaught is anyone's guess. But one thing is assured; the Renegades go from strength to strength. This is 'punk poetry' at its very best and most abrasive. Well done guys, keep up the good work. One day the rest of them will catch-up with the Renegade way of looking at the world.

	Last night I accompanied Jane from the Renegade writers to Nellies Pub in Beverley to what turned out to be a terrific night of competitive poetry readings. Ten years ago I'd be ribbed and teased. My mates would have said "you're going soft" to have spent the evening in front of a roaring fire listening to poetry in one of the oldest pubs in England. . Read more...

	This evening (29th Nov) I was invited out by Adelat a Kurdish friend to take part in the local celebrations of Eid al-Fitr marking the Breaking of the Ramadan Fast.
