Dixons Gala Charity Night in aid of Headway continued
Tuesday 27th July
At The Goodfellowship Inn, Cottingham Road, Hull

Needless to say, the panic set in. Firstly, for the wellbeing of the guy who had
been taken to hospital with what appeared to be a heart attack, and of course for
the gala that night which now had about 90 minutes worth of entertainment to find.
I was home a few minutes later and after calming down I began to call everyone that
I thought might be able to help but at such short notice, things did not look good.
|
|
|
I spoke to so many people who all did their best to help but unfortunately couldn't.
I finally spoke to a friend of a friend who said that they could get a band together
for me in time for the evening's entertainment.
|
|
The time came, the function room was decorated and the audience had started to arrive,
but unfortunately not all of the band members did.
As it was such short notice not all had been able to make it.
Time for desperate measures. I asked a good friend of mine to make a call to an
ex-colleague who was also a singer (John Daniels).
We had apparently disturbed him whilst he was watching Eastenders but he agreed
to come and do a half hour slot for us.
|
|
The evening went ahead, albeit with a little less entertainment than originally
planned. Alan Hudson, the magician, performed a fantastic mind-reading cabaret
act that left the audience stunned; John Daniels performed some Frank Sinatra
and Dean Martin classics; Sarah Tomlinson brilliantly sang three songs before
joining me in a duet of Diana Ross' You Can't Hurry Love and then the raffle was
drawn before the disco began.
|
|
|
What had previously been a well-organised event turned into an absolute nightmare
via things beyond anyone's control, but the night was then at least partly
rescued and I can only hope that people enjoyed themselves despite the many setbacks.
The gala night did raise £425 which will now hopefully be doubled by
Dixons Group head office, ending up with £850 to donate to Headway,
which after all was what the night was all about (as well as having a good time!).
|
Organising the event was hard work, hard work which then turned into a
nightmare situation, but then to see the event go ahead and raise so much money was very rewarding.
Thank you to all who participated on the night; the audience, and to
my friends who supported me through its planning.

Going Down - Malarky Returns to Glastonbury 2004
|
|
This year I returned to that ever so laaaarrrrgggggeeee festival. Some call it gluttony, some
Glastonbury. Arriving a day early meant the ground was dry when I put up tent.
Rain, then wind, then sun, then rain. Sun, heavy rain, then it pissed it down
again..........another washout at Glasto, surely not?

Going Down - World Music Day at Queens Gardens Saturday 19th June By Jane Foster
|
|
I'd been praying that the rain would hold off for this very special event at Queens Gardens.
Luckily it did for most of the day, and with bands from as far afield as Zimbabwe and Afghanistan,
we all ended up dancing our little socks off..
The day was organised by Chris Smith at the Warren centre, and hats off to
him for putting on a great event

Going Down - Cannabis March to smoky bears picnic in Pearson Park By Carl Wagner
|
|
The bullying nature of the so called war on drugs makes it difficult for many people to even voice an opinion on cannabis, so well done to the 100 or so that turned up for the 4th annual cannabis protest march.
The march left Queens Gardens at 1.00 pm with a police escort, and noisily worked its' way through the city centre

On Tuesday 25th May I accompanied Cilla to Nortech Ladies Night on Drypool Way.

Going Down - Rain Didn't Stop Voices In Play By Rich Mills
|
|
I awoke this morning to a miserable day. Quite depressing after all the glorious sun we've had lately. More so because today was to be a large out-door event organised by community activists Voices In Play.
It's A Community Knockout, supposed to be held at Princess

After a successful and highly entertaining launch party featuring Turismo, I was interested
to see what Sweet-n-Sour could offer in the way of showcasing bigger, signed acts.
On tonights billing, headliners Kasabian, fresh from a successful Glastonbury

Sweet n Sour at the Welly Club 22/07/2004 Kasabian, Mad Action, The Landaus By Andy Dykes
|
|
Outside the Welly Club tonight there's thunder, lightning and heavy rain.
The bouncers pass umbrellas down the queue so that the line of punters waiting to get in can
stay as dry as possible.
I'm told that there aren't as many people here as last week.
This is only the second time that the Welly has put on its Sweet n Sour night,
and
