Insomnia must be a real advantage when you're investigating the paranormal. At least, it would have been if the night at Holmpton had passed slowly - but for me, and for Mo, it was an amazing and unforgettable experience, and I for one intend repeating it as soon as the opportunity next arises. So, there we were, the car drawing up to the guardhouse of the Holmpton bunker near Withernsea. The event was fully attended (twelve places having been made available to the paying public) and well co-ordinated.

Not a bad turnout for the inaugural gathering of our hosts, Spiritual Renaissance.

Spiritual Renaissance are a new, Hull-based group of experienced paranormal investigators, headed up by psychic couple Graham and Ellen Lee. They offer the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of a complete paranormal investigation, and it was at their invitation that thisisull.com sent the reporting duo Mo and Blair (yours truly), to document the evening's events. We were both open-minded, cautiously excited, and there was a noticeable air of anticipation amongst the guests.

We were greeted by Ellen, and by James Fox, who would be our guide to the facility - an underground RAF installation that had had several structural and functional changes since its construction in the 1950's. It is now primarily a tourist attraction but is still used occasionally for meetings and exercises by RAF regiment and RAF police, whilst recently undergoing modification into a centre for archive study.

We went through the turnstile in the guardhouse and descended a flight of stairs to a long, dimly lit, corridor that sloped down into the earth. The whole bunker covers the area about the size of a football pitch and was made to withstand a near-direct hit by nuclear attack during the post-war unrest between the world's superpowers. It was built in an era of uncertainty and mistrust, and if such things as disembodied spirits exist, this must surely be a strong candidate for the focus of supernatural energy.

Once inside, we were led into the small cinema where Graham Lee welcomed us all along, introducing the rest of the Spiritual Renaissance team and allowing each to say a few words of their own. Graham then distributed an agenda for the night and asked for volunteers to take solo "challenges" later on. These challenges were mostly for individuals to spend time alone in various hot-spots around the building, with only a night-vision video camera for company.
