I did manage to catch the end of metal act Zhain.
They played a Stones number and I remarked to the compere (Paul from the White Room)
how much the singer looked like Dave Stewart of the Eurhythmics.
The musician beside him was no Annie Lennox though, towards the end of the song he
showed of considerable skill on bass.
I met up with friends Sam and Louise who were equally disappointed when I told
them that two of Hull's top bands had pulled out.
Unfortunately The Landaus had cancelled also, due to their drummer being away in Scotland.
Their spirits rose somewhat when I assured them that SideWinder were still playing.
|
|
There appeared to be some delay on the main stage, so we took a walk to meet up with
Lee the new drummer from Fifty-Nine Violets.
We walked and talked about everything and nothing, enjoying the hot weather and the equally warm atmosphere.
There was a fairground in the park, various stalls including one from Gvants selling first
rate curries and other Indian fare.
|
We found Lee at the front gates carrying a certain crate of liquid refreshment
and then strolled gently back across the park.
We stopped for the girls to experience the wonder and delights of festival toilets.
On our return a band called Someone and The Somethings were cutting their
festival teeth on the main stage with some soul classics; including the much loved
Sandy Shaw number Son of a Preacher Man.
|
|
|
I was particularly impressed with the strong female performances; I immediately
felt here is an absolute gem, a shining jewel to fit into Hull's musical crown.
|
|
A blast of brass from trumpeter Simon and Sax too, the trio of voices from
Charmaine, Lisa and Matt, the brisk jazz styled percussion and piano from Joel
all made for a dynamic entertaining sound.
They finished with a self-penned number that was reminiscent of the upbeat Ska songs
of The Supatones.
The audience scattered around the stage in a wide arc, clap and cheer as Someone
and the Somethings finished with a flourish.
|
|
After their set I was lucky enough to meet some of the new music collective.
They explained they were based at the Hull University so I presume they are studying
the Arts in some form or another.
They have been playing for about five months and this was their first proper public
performance I learned from Matt.
|
I explained that when I saw the name on the bill Someone and The Somethings
curiosity got the better of me and I just had to find out who they were.
We discussed whether the band should keep the name and I told them that the
name alone could get the first time crowds interested then later they would
come to witness the musical prowess.
A very agreeable group of individuals who I look forward to finding out more about soon.

Embarrassed as I'm to say it, but you can hardly have failed to have seen my ugly mug staring
back at you from the pages of the Hull Daily Mail recently.
What has got them so excited that I will soon need to employ a Press Officer?
Well, the simple idea of Reclaim the Night.

Going Down - Oak Leaf Gathering (or Carry On Pagan) By Rich Mills
|
|
Oak Leaf gathering is an annual event, bringing together pagans from all over the country for a weekend.
In the setting of Lime Tree farm, the whole thing had an air of mystery.
Not just the wonderful stone circle, or the fantastic Iron-age round-house,
not even the beauty of the Yorkshire countryside that surrounded us.

Grounation Hull Jazz Festival 31st July By Jane Foster
|
|
Grounation were the first and the final act to go on today, and they didn't disappoint.
They're a jazz-funk-hip-hop outfit consisting of mainly Hull born musicians.
Apparently they got together specifically for this year's Jazz festival, but they
intend to carry on as a band, they told me.
They've got a good combination

Oh what a treat the highly acclaimed Zimbabwean poet and his stunning group Imbongi
(praise poets) performing at the Hull Jazz festival 2004.
It was a grey drizzly day in Queens Gardens, the sky threatened us with a downpour
but my spirits would not be dampened.
The musicians from Imbongi started to play.

Where do I start? Working at Dixons xL in Hull and having being involved in the organisation
of two such events previously, I thought that providing all was well planned, what could go wrong?
To be honest, right up until the actual morning of the day itself, all had gone particularly well.
The organisation begins
