Lasagne & Salad Supper
by Jessica, Amenah and Hannah
There we were, Thursday afternoon with nothing much to do and tummies starting to rumble.

So we looked around the kitchen and scraped together a few ingredients, then decided on lasagne as it was the last thing me and Amenah had cooked in school that we got an A for!
Mum had to drive us to the nearest supermarket to pick up some Lasagne sheets as we'd run out, but the rest we had. This is what we did.

First me and Amenah peeled and chopped the onions which made us cry cos they were so strong and it took us ages.

Then we fried them in a pan with a bit of oil and added loads of mince till it sizzled and went brown.
After chopping and sieving 2 tins of tomatoes, I spooned them into the pan, then added the tomato juice and a teaspoon of bouquet garnet and 3 bay leaves.

Amenah was in charge of stirring it all up now and again and adding salt & pepper.
We made the white sauce by melting about 3 tablespoons of margarine and then adding about 2 tablespoons of flour and mixing it up.

This went back on the heat then I stirred it again while adding about ¾ of a litre of milk, some salt & pepper.

This had to be heated until it got thick, but we had to keep mixing it every now and again so it didn't lump up.

Into an oven dish we spooned a layer of the tomatoey meat, then a layer of lasagna sheets topped with the white sauce and we kept on layering like this until all the meat was used up and the top layer was the white sauce.
Now we grated a big lump of cheese and sprinkled it on top of the whole lot, then cooked it in a hot oven for about 25 mins.
Next it was Hannah's turn to make the salad.

She washed a lettuce carefully to get all the slugs and soil out (Mum had picked it fresh from our allotment) and put it into a bowl.

Then she added tomatoes from the greenhouse, slices of cucumber, onion and some peppers.

These are our results and this is all of us enjoying it in front of a video that our friend Ian brought round. It turned out a fun night after all!

Have fun and happy cooking!

Cooking - Chicken Curry by Anne
We have spent most of the week-end at the WOMAD festival in Reading. We spent loads of money on food which was a bit disappointing and when we got home we thought it might be nice to try to make something like a WOMAD curry. This is a really gorgeous curry Read more...

Food Reviews - Chinese Delight! by Petra
Woke up this morning and had an overwhelming desire for Chinese so I decided to test out Wins,35 Spring Bank with my 10 year old son. They have a superb lunchtime offer - £2.50 for any main course minus fillet steak and duck dishes. Read more...

Food Reviews - Pizza Planet Plummets! by Petra
Moving further up Spring Bank I recently frequented Pizza Planet - a Pizza/Kebab/Burger/Fried Chicken etc etc take-away. Top Tip- I shouldn't have bothered. My cheeseburger was bland to say the least - the succulent tasting stick certainly wasn't hitting Read more...

Music Reviews - Shindigg/Silence in the Streets/Build Up to Nothing/Killer of Saints/The Flatmates Adelphi, Hull
by Eammon Chirdlich - Sunday 30th Nov.
I arrived at the Adelphi with some trepidation - an afternoon of live music with five bands, only one of which I'd seen live before and from their names, it sounded like a real mixed bag. Nevertheless, I paid my three pounds and prepared.. Read more...

Music Reviews - Sidewinder, still life and Martyn Wharrie Adelphi Club 20th November by Cilla and Mo
We started off the evening badly by arriving late at the gig. Shame on us, we missed most of the first performance. However, what I did hear made me want to listen. Mo came along too and he was knocked out - by all the musicians we saw. I think he thought I was exaggerating when I raved about still life and Sidewinder in my last review - until he saw for himself. Read more...

Music Reviews - Silhouette Club - Friday 14th November 12 Inch Thumpers Tour - Headlining: Jason Nawty
I've decided that I want to write this review anonymously. The reasons for this I'll try to make clear: I'm sorry, Silhouette, but your staff are the worst 'team' my friends and I have come across in Hull. Your doorstaff act like untrained monkeys, your bar staff walk around like they work in a funeral parlour and the only member of staff who was very pleasant and witty was the cloakroom attendant. Holidays - Cyprus by Petra
One dismal Monday afternoon I was sitting in the pub with my neighbour David, bemoaning the weather and feeling miserable, when David uttered the immortal words "let's go on holiday". Quicker than you can say " Linford Christie" we were at the travel agents choosing our destination. Read more...

Articles - Burglary in Hull
I really didn't want to write about this. But I've decided that maybe I should. Life in Hull is about bad things too. Last week we were burgled. One small window left open and one tempting bicycle on view.
