Community Resource Learning & Training - IT TAKES A CITY
|
You may have heard the saying It takes a village to raise a child.
At Volcom, we believe that it takes a city - our city - to raise all of our children.
That's why we're asking all adults who care about, and are interested in the future of our
city, to help Hull's young people fulfil their potential.
Parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles, neighbours and friends - it doesn't
matter who you are - so long as you would like to help, we can give you the
opportunity to have a real impact.
|
|
|
Research has shown that one of the main things that makes the difference to
children's educational achievement is adults other than teachers who will talk and
listen to children, and show an interest in their schoolwork.
|
Why 'adults other than teachers'?
Because children already know that their teachers are about their exam results.
The cheeky ones even tell them; You're only bothered about GCSEs because you
get into trouble if we don't pass our exams.
What makes the difference is when young people know that their learning, ambitions
and aspirations are listened to and respected, not only by their teachers,
but also by adults from the wider community.
|
|
|
So, what can we do?
You might help to supervise a group of young people revising for their
exams - just by being there to support the teachers.
Or you could be a mentor, helping to make sure an individual child is keeping
on track with their work, talking to them about what they are doing,
and finding out if there is any additional help they might need.
If there is something you know you're good at, whether it is woodwork, speaking
Spanish or organising a Sunday football league, then we can match you up
with a young person who you can help.
|
|
But I can't make head or tail of what my own kids are learning these days, how can I help?
No matter who you are, you can help - even if you hated school yourself, even if you
know you're not brilliant at spelling and writing, or still struggle with maths.
For a start, you will be given training in How to motivate yourself and others - and
use that to support your own kids' learning.
You will be taught Marvellous Spelling - learning how people who are good at spelling
do it - and you can too.
|
|
You can volunteer to help other people's children with what you are good at -
knowing that someone else will be helping your kids with what THEY are good at.
|
So if maths feels like rocket science to you, if French sounds like double Dutch,
if you can't kick a ball for toffee - it doesn't matter, because someone else
in the city can, and all of you - all of us together - will be making
the difference, to All Our Futures.
To find out more, phone Isabelle Tracy on 382521 and say you are calling about
It Takes A City.
|
|
|
All training is free, and out-of pocket expenses will be paid.
There will be further training opportunities for those who are interested.
Daytime, evening and weekend training and volunteering sessions are available.
