Research Trip to Reggio Emilia From McMillan Nursery School, Hull

Reggio Emilia, a small town in northern Italy, has become an international focus of interest for arts educationalists working with young children.

The education of all children is continually explored and developed by the staff, who always include an artist - an atelierista - and this is proving to be a significant component in the development of the creativity of children in early years settings.
The Mcmillan Nursery School in Hull are working with an artist in residence - Alex Hallowes from the company Exceptional Designs - with a view to adapting the Reggio approach to their particular conditions. The school are also host to a PhD student, Nick Owen from Liverpool, who is researching the impact of Reggio inspired work on the school life of McMillan Nursery School.

Exceptional Designs is a partnership between two artists, Alex Hallowes and Pete Rogers, whose work includes exhibitions, public art commissions, community art projects and projects in schools.
Alex Hallowes is a graduate silversmith, who worked in community theatre prior to gaining her degree. She has recently completed an MA in Arts Education. Pete Rogers is a chartered engineer whose work has taken him around the world to developing countries for agencies such as the United Nations. Since 1997 he has been a full time artist.
Nick Owen has worked in arts production and education for 15 years in Merseyside as producer, educator and manager and now works as Executive Producer for the Liverpool based film company, Latent Productions.

In May this year, a group of staff from McMillan, Alex, Pete and Nick all participated in a research trip to Reggio supported by Creative Partnerships Hull and organised by the Newcastle agency, the Sightlines Initiative.
The group (going under the pseudonym of the Reggio Maniacs) were inspired by their time there not only to write and perform a rap (the Reggio No) at the closing ceremony of the research visit, but to produce a short film which celebrated the work in Reggio Schools.
That film - A Riot of Education in Reggio Emilia - has been turned into a DVD. The soundtrack for the film is the track, Silver Sea ( Southside Freedom Fighters Mix) by the N. Lincs band, the 59 Violets.

The DVD also consists of a slide show of photos from the week, together with an accompanying sound track based on Eric Satie's Gnossiennes by Merseyside based composer, Gary Carpenter.
The DVD will be presented at various Creative Partnership events in Hull and around the UK, presented at conference in Belfast and sent to the Sightlines Initiative in Newcastle for inclusion on their website, ensuring the work will get seen in settings across the UK - and by partners in Italy.

Kids Articles - Fisher Park By Richard Clancy, Kayleigh Gouldson and Taking Pictures By Kyle
I went to Fisher Park to make a film and take photographs of the local area. I think that the graffiti on Fisher park 'sucks' because graffiti is horrible. It makes the area look worse than it already is. I like living on Orchard Park, but it doesn't look very nice. The older youths in the area make it worse with all the graffiti they spray all over the place. Read more...
