Community Media
Living In A Digital Community
By Rich Mills
next page

Over the summer there are a series of digital media workshops going on over in East Hull, at the Partners 4 Change (Hull DOC) base in St. Marks church on Ings Estate.

Every Wednesday and Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, the young people of East Hull can get to grips with the digital world.

Despite living in a so called Digital City very few young people are allowed to get there hands on digital cameras, camcorders, editing equipment and laptops.
The principal behind the workshops is to feed into the young peoples ease with technology. Letting them play with the equipment, and discover (with some guidance) both its and their capabilities.
The workshops also cover Community Reporting, giving young people the opportunity to think, talk, and write about their community as they see it.

Now into its second week, the series of workshops have so far looked at how news is covered, with particular emphasis on community reporting. In addition the participants have been taking part in a digital photography workshop and created their own news programme.
In the weeks to come the young people involved in the workshops will get the opportunity to write their own newsletter, for distribution in the local area, and make a short film about living in their community.

Below are written pieces from some of the young people who have taken part in the workshops so far. They are comments on their lives, and their views of living in their local community and in the city of 'ull.

My life is good when I am play out with my friends. I think we need a park in our community. In our park I think we need a pool and bark so we don't fall over and hurt our selves. Please may we have a zoo in the middle of town?

I live in 'ull, that's where I'm from,
It's the place where I belong,
I stay in a place called Ings,
And want to suggest many things,
First I think we need a park,
A place for all the kids to "lark",
We need a lot more things to do,
Activities for me and you,
People need more room to stay,
Then kids could come out and play,
This is 'ull and what we need,
Now all go out and follow my lead.

We don't have much to do in our community like in the holidays and on nights after school so I think the council should give us a decent park or something. Our park is rusty and old and all the paint is peeling off everything. Also I think we should have a skate park because we don't really have a place to skate (Apart from on the roads)

I think we need a park for the little kids. By the way we should have a better paddling pool because I got glass in my foot and I had to go home because it a very deep cut.

Kids Articles - Fisher Park By Richard Clancy, Kayleigh Gouldson and Taking Pictures By Kyle
I went to Fisher Park to make a film and take photographs of the local area. I think that the graffiti on Fisher park 'sucks' because graffiti is horrible. It makes the area look worse than it already is. I like living on Orchard Park, but it doesn't look very nice. The older youths in the area make it worse with all the graffiti they spray all over the place. Read more...

Going Down - Rain Didn't Stop Voices In Play By Rich Mills
I awoke this morning to a miserable day. Quite depressing after all the glorious sun we've had lately. More so because today was to be a large out-door event organised by community activists Voices In Play. It's A Community Knockout, supposed to be held at Princess Read more...
