HEROS - For All Your Local Information Needs

HEROS (Hull & East Riding Options) www.heros.org.uk is a one-stop shop for anyone seeking information on health, community or social care information within the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The website comprises over a thousand pages of information and has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors during the past three years.
On average the site attracts 25,000 visitors per month. The site is aimed at everyone and anyone living locally and is here to help people make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

The types of Information that can be found on Heros include:

HELP: This offers information on self-help and care organisations, doctors, dentists and opticians. Self Help, Care and Advice - this subsection lists voluntary and statutory sources of help for health and social care problems, ranging from mental health to cancer.

Check Local Health Services for information on hospitals, doctors, health screening, chemists etc.

Other general types of help such as NHS Direct, telephone help lines, advocacy and counselling services include:

CRISIS: This offers information about hospitals, police, late chemists and other organisations you may need in times of crisis. Most people at some point in their lives come up against some sort of emergency or crisis situation. If you have an emergency and don't know who to contact, but know that something has to be done now, use these pages for information, contacts and out of hours services.

LOCAL LIVING: This offers information on issues affecting your health and well being such as finding work, benefits, education, community groups, careers, colleges, transport and leisure. Health and well-being is not just about avoiding the flu and having regular checks up at the dentist.

Feeling good or feeling down can be affected by a whole range of things that have nothing to do with illness and doctors. Finding yourself out of work; feeling you haven't reached your potential in education; worrying about money; living in substandard housing; feeling isolated in your community or finding it hard to get around - these are just some of the things that can make us feel pretty miserable at times. Put a few of these together and our health can really start to suffer.

HEALTH: This provides links to a wide range of information on health conditions and treatments, healthy living and local services. Rather than giving you lots of details about local services, Health Explained will guide you to useful background information about health and social care. You'll find health news, information about the NHS and healthy living features. We have also listed a number of useful internet portals that open up a wealth of information about every aspect of health.

LEGAL ADVICE: Information from the Community Legal Service on legal issues, benefits, welfare, & housing etc. Heros provides a database of local services offering advice and information and also there are a range of downloadable information leaflets covering a range of issues ranging from housing to disability
