Sunday 2nd November 08 - 100 Free Pints Event at The Alexandra Hotel

On Sunday 2nd November, starting at 11:00 a.m., The A63 Revisited, Waterstones and ThisisUll.com are sponsoring an event at The Alexandra Hotel, 69 Hessle Road, Hull, to promote the launch of two gangster novels based in Hull recently published by two Hull writers - Clipped by Danny Birch, and The Dance of the Pheasodile by Tim Roux. The event will revive an old Hull fishing community tradition. In the heyday of the Hull fishing industry, Mrs. Turner, the landlady of The Alexandra Hotel, Hull, would set up 100 lunchtime pints on the bar ready for the onslaught of thirsty fishermen.

For lunchtime on Sunday 2 November, the sponsors have bought 100 pints to be set up on the bar of The Alexandra Hotel, 69 Hessle Road, Hull (on the dual-carriageway outside the Smith+Nephew building), available for free to anyone dropping by on a first-come, first-served basis. Waterstones will be setting up a stall inside the pub to offer for sale works by a wide range of published writers associated with Hull & the East Riding.

The A63 Revisited website ( www.a63revisited.com ) is devoted to showcasing the work of all artists associated with Hull & the East Riding under the slogan If you think you are a Hull & ER artist, so do we. The site currently features the work of 48 Hull & ER published writers, poets and playwrights, providing profiles on 23 of these. The coverage will be expanded shortly to include artists from other media.

While there are two national literary events hosted annually in the region - the Humber Mouth Festival and the Beverley Literature Festival - there is nothing as such devoted exclusively to local artists.

The sponsors of the 100 Free Pints event intend that this should be the first of a continuing series of events showcasing the many very talented published artists associated with Hull & the East Riding, including Clive Ashman, Danny Birch, Daphne Glazer, Dorothea Desforges, John Spencer, Nick Quantrill, Peter Jones, Robert Adams, Robert Edric, Simon Carr, Tim Roux, Valerie Wood (novelists), Alan Plater, Dave Windass, John Godber (playwrights), Christopher Reid, Cliff Forshaw, David Wheatley, Holly Roach, Peter Knaggs, Ian Parks, Andrew Motion, Tony Flynn (poets) and, of course, Dean Windass.
