Opening Friday 21st March 08 - Bunker Tours At R.A.F. Holmpton

The Royal Air Force base at Holmpton opens to visitors on Good Friday 21st March 2008. The tour comes with brand new exhibitions, a whole new public tour and new films and shows. Inside the bunker you will find the fully restored 1960's Message Centre which would have handled all the bunkers communications during the 60's and 70's when the site operated as an early Warning Radar Station. This area has been fully restored over the winter months and now holds one of the largest displays of historic equipment in the UK, all generously donated from the former Top Secret Government Installation at R.A.F. Rudloe.

RAF Holmpton (as seen on BBC Look North recently) operated between 1951 and 1974 as a Master Radar Station. In 1974 the radar closed and the station became a training centre for the RAF Police and the RAF Regiment. In 1985 it underwent a major refit to become home to RAF Support Command with extensive rebuilding in 1995 as an experimental Electronic Warfare Command Centre.

Set in 10 ft of solid concrete The Bunker lies 100ft beneath the East Yorkshire Countryside and covers some 35,000sq ft on two floors. Public tours guide visitors through the vast Headquarters still part of the RAF today, films, demonstrations and shows reveal over 50 years of Top Secret History. We are open from Good Friday 21st March until 30th November 2008.(Tours every day during Easter Week/July & August and every Wed/Thur/Sat & Sun throughout the rest of the year)
