Tuesday 13th - Wednesday 14th March 07 - Hull College Students Bring History To Life!
|
For two days only students from Hull College will transform the city's
Streetlife museum into a 'live attraction'.
Visitors will be able to take a walk through Hull's past - from the
Civil War at the gates to the city, to the history of the docklands,
via spirits and ghosts to wartime Hull - and all in under 90 minutes!
The exciting initiative is part of the William Wilberforce celebrations,
and visitors can get an insight into this important historical figure,
learning there's much more to him than his role as a key player in abolishing slavery.
|
|
|
They can also climb on board an original tram and find out more about transport in the city before disembarking and stepping into a 1920s music hall for a singalong to some traditional seaside songs.
|
|
From there, they can find out about bicycles and bicycle racing in Hull
before taking a peek into life on the railways in the area, and heading to
a street set in World War Two.
A Streetlife spokesperson said: 'This will be a thought-provoking experience.
Our visitors can find out about how we were the most bombed city after London,
before experiencing a realistic air-raid, followed by a stop at the Co-op to
draw out their weekly rations.
"Just a short walk away, they can experience some ghostly tales from a
certain plastics factory, before finding out what life was like on the
trawlers and the docks, before finally meeting the man himself, William Wilberforce.'
|
Technical Theatre students have being looking after the production elements
of the event, organising equipment, costumes, sponsors and publicity as well
as working out the actual logistics of putting on an event of this size
Acting students have been researching, scripting and rehearsing performances for the event.
Tours will operate every 20 minutes throughout both days and will be led by
acting students playing key personalities from Hull past, the first being
Thomas Sheppard, Hull's first curator.
The event has being organised with the help of Mike Hughes, Keeper of
Transport at Streetlife, who has also being able to help acquire a number
of authentic items for use in performances.
|
|
|
Hull College Head of School of Media and Performing Arts, Marguerite Mackley
said 'This project is a fantastic opportunity for all of the students involved,
to work in an outside venue, and take on responsibility for many of the major
aspects involved in putting on an event of this nature.
I'm impressed with the amount of enthusiasm shown by the students and
I don't think anyone will want to miss the final product'.
Tours will run every 20 minutes between 10am -11am and 12.20pm -3pm on
Tuesday 13th March, and 10am -11am and 12.20pm - 2pm on Wednesday 14th March.
