Wednesday 17th October 07 - Kurdish Cultural Event at Hull City Hall

Organised by the Kurdish community of Hull, supported by ARKH; this Kurdish Cultural Event at the City Hall is the largest and most innovative showcase of Kurdish culture, both historical and modern ever to be held in the UK.

Our guest of honour is her Worship the Lord Mayor of Hull and her Consort, who will attend a reception beforehand; also invited are leaders of local industry who employ Kurds in their workforce, Hull City Leaders, Councillors and leaders within the local voluntary sector.
It will feature a fashion show from Delkash of London, a London Millennium Award-Winner for innovative ideas and projects; she will bring with her more than 40 costumes integrating traditional and modern Kurdish styles and presenting the most innovative and beautiful clothes seen only before in London and Paris.

Hull is privileged to be able to have the opportunity to see these fashions before their debut in Kurdistan this December; in addition we will have the opportunity to see several historic costumes from different areas of Kurdistan demonstrating the rich heritage that unites the Kurds, albeit separated under the different regimes of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria and Armenia.
We are also delighted that the talented Govenda Zilan dance group from London are performing for us; with members originally from Northern Kurdistan (Turkey) they perform regional dances from all of Kurdistan demonstrating the rich cultural heritage of this nation of people without a country.

Hardy Ahmed, a Kurdish poet from Sulaimaniya, now living in Hull, will read some of his poetry.
He is a young poet whose talent is being recognized in his home country through the internet; he is unable to return to this country from which he fled as a teenager and now is studying English language to enable him to create his poetry in English as well as his mother tongue of Kurdish Sorani.

Kurdish musicians from the UK are performing music with traditional Kurdish instruments; their music speaks of tragedy and love as only they can play.
For the finale of our evening we have invited the world famous singer Adnan Karim who is now resident in Sweden. He has accepted our invitations and visas for his musicians are now being arranged; the opportunity to hear such a renowned singer perform live in Hull is an experience not to be missed.

This event is not just for the Kurdish Community but an opportunity for them to showcase their historical and artistic culture to the British community.

Tickets (£10) are on sale at the Hull City Hall Box Office and may also be ordered from ARKH at 22/23, Albion Street, HULL, HU1 3TG Tel: 01482 ... 214178 Email: arkh_project@yahoo.co.uk
