Coming Up, Community
Last Updated: 01/03/2007 20:22:04
Saturday 3rd March 07 - Thornton 'Healthy Heart' Community Event At The Octagon, Walker Street, Hull 10am - 3pm

The Thornton 'Healthy Heart' Community Event will be taking place this Saturday, the 3rd March, at The Octagon on Walker Street, West Hull. The event will run from 10am until 3pm and will focus on bringing information about the benefits of exercise to local residents. Organised by Thornton Neighbourhood Management and the local NHS Health Trainer, the event will demonstrate that keeping fit doesn't need to be boring.

Health service providers such as Gary Jennison, the NHS Health Trainer for the area, and the Riverside Medical Centre, based in the Octagon, will be in attendance to provide information about living a healthy lifestyle to local people.
In addition, social groups such as Hull CTC, the Cycling Club, will also demonstrate that exercise can be a social occasion. Belly dancing workshops will be available for local women to sign up to and learn some seductive new skills and the Octagon Gym will be there to showcase the great fitness facilities available on our doorstep.

The Warren will be providing Circus Skills lessons to bring out the clown in everyone; giant Connect 4, Jenga and Chess games can be played by kids of all ages, courtesy of Volcom; and Hull Club Salsa will be demonstrating the passion and energy of salsa dancing. The event will also feature a Treasure Hunt to encourage people to get the most from the event, with completed entries being entered into a prize draw!
James Russell, Deputy Neighbourhood Manager at Thornton Neighbourhood Management, said of the event, "I think that this event will be really useful for local residents. Many people want to have a healthier lifestyle, but don't know where to start, or think that exercise is a chore.

With the wide range of agencies and groups attending this event we can demonstrate that there are plenty of activities that are good for you, suitable for all ages and abilities, and, most importantly, which are great fun!"

Richard McKeating, Octagon Fitness Centre Manager added, "This is a great opportunity to raise awareness of heart health in Hull. Belly dancing and other activities are very underrated in terms of what they can do to improve fitness.
Getting healthy does not need to be laborious and you don't need a 'no pain, no gain' attitude. People can have fun whilst gradually improving their health and making small changes to their diet. All of this helps people feel better and live longer."
Thornton Neighbourhood Management and the NHS Health Trainer Service would like to acknowledge the assistance of Goodwin Development Trust in providing funding for the event, and Humberside Police and Citysafe for helping with funding publicity materials.

The Thornton Healthy Heart Event will provide a range of filming and photo opportunities, and organisers and exhibitors will be available for comment throughout the day.

For further information, or for further comments before the event, please contact James Russell at Thornton Neighbourhood Management on 01482 482491, or email jrussell@goodwin-centre.org.
