Wednesday 18th April 07 - Keep Your Mate In Mind - Psypher Benefit Gig At The Adelphi
|
Jellycat Media presents a Psypher fundraiser dance featuring
Mikey J (Shinobi/Tuesday Club) vs Georgey (Stealth/Beat Freq) and Bungle
(Funky/Larkin Out) plus Special Guest DJs and MCs! Hip hop/ breakbeats/ drum 'n' bass.
Often it's friends and family who notice that something is wrong when a
young person is exhibiting the early signs of psychosis.
A new mental health promotion campaign aims to target friends giving them
advice on symptoms to look out for and where to get help. Information has
been distributed on flyers advertising Psypher's latest benefit gig.
|
|
|
This night follows a successful fundraiser organized by
Hull University Students Union in March in aid of Psypher.
The proceeds are being used to offer a number of DJing workshops over the
summer to young people who have experienced psychosis.
Participants will go on to have an opportunity to perform with Mikey J and
others at a follow up gig in the autumn. Mikey said I offered to do this
benefit for Psypher because I believe their work is really important.
I hope the workshops will act as a catalyst to build young people's confidence
and contribute to them moving on. Having a gig to work towards will be a great
focus for the work.
|
-
Psychosis is four times more common than diabetes in young people
-
In the UK over 100,000 receive treatment for psychosis each year
-
There are about 7,500 new cases of psychosis in England each year
-
ONE in FOUR people will have a significant episode of mental illness at some time in their lives
-
70-80% of people will get better within 36 weeks of receiving support and treatment
-
Drugs and alcohol are often used to cope or self medicate
-
At present it takes on average, 1-2 years between people having psychotic symptoms and getting effective help.
|
|
|
Jellycat Media Ltd is a social enterprise set up to provide
inspirational activities and training for young people who have, or are at
risk of experiencing psychosis.
Working in partnership with Psypher (Psychosis Service for
Young People in Hull and East Riding) and Friends of Psypher
(an independent group of families and mental health service users set up to
support the work of Psypher), it aims to use raise awareness of
psychosis through training, events and lobbying for a strategic partnership
approach to achieving early detection/intervention and social reintegration
for young people.
