Wednesday 22nd August 07 - Urban Artz Presents Off The Road At Hull New Adelphi Club 8pm - 11 pm
|
Inspired by the carefree Beatnik shenanigans of the '50s and - more specifically
(and bang-up-to-date) - Hull's own burgeoning scene of artistic mavericks,
Urban Artz is proud to present Off The Road at the New Adelphi Club on
Wednesday 22nd August, 8 - 11 p.m.
And it's only £3.00 to get on board for a capacity-filled evening of live music,
poetry, performance art and theatre.
In between their busy touring, filmmaking and recording commitments, the evening will
be hosted by the renowned duo CrackTown (described in some quarters as being 'anti-folk'-
but they do like people, really), and who are firmly-established in the region for
their caustic wit, immediately catchy tunes, and well-aimed profanity.
|
|
|
A number of already 'out there' and up-and-coming poets will be sounding off their
thoughts in a direct and no-nonsense manner, including the verbal (and sometimes visceral)
delights of Mike Watts, Paul England, and the joint winner of Poetry Idol '07, Joe Hakim.
In addition to original music and poetry, Off The Road will also showcase work from the
worlds of theatre and performance. Scarlet Lights are Hull's own new, vibrant all-female
theatre company and, with the debut of its new piece Sheality, promise to leave the
audience gagging for more.
|
The grandly titled Philip Wincolmlee Barnes is offering (and/or threatening) his own
brand of performance art, which frequently spirals between comedy, self-abasement and
minor acts of self-destruction - always in the most entertaining of ways.
Doing himself an injustice by describing himself as 'a cheeky potty-mouth short arse',
Jim Sorrow (formerly of the Freaks Union, frequently regarded up and down the country
as the best punk band this side of '77), will be howling his own manic brand of
intense 'banjo punk n' roll', and showing off his impressive canvas of tattoos.
|
|
|
Well-known local artist Yol (who once appeared on TV trying to sell a plate of
uneaten food) will be presenting his new collaborative music-and-guttural aural
assault 5-7-5; given his somewhat-notorious tenure in previous bands, such as
Gobble And The Cocks' and S**t Loads of F**k All, this doesn't promise to be
the easy-listening part of the evening.
By contrast, there will be an acoustic set by the versatile and dexterous
singer-songwriter Ussif Nagi, whose encyclopaedic repertoire includes original
compositions and other firm favourites.
Another musical highlight, and the climax of the night overall, will be
The James Dean Syndrome, a group of blues-funk young bloods, who will be kicking out
the sort of jams that is cementing their already-escalating reputation as big stage contenders.
|
With this sort of standing room only line-up, with your support Off The Road can't
possibly crash and burn. Urban Artz, who promote and stage events for the local
artistic community, aims to make this a regular feature on Hull's own cultural
sat-nav system, offering a free lift to diverse and promising acts who wish to get on board.
To contact Urban Artz, ask for their project manager Jayne Wright on 07852 311631 or email
her at .
