Friday 8th December 06 - Hull Film Presents Disabling Portraits At Hull Screen, University Of Lincoln George Street 8pm
|
Hull Film presents Disabling Portraits, a special film programme focussing on issues surrounding disability. A programme of films that investigate the nature of human thought and communication, specifically focussing on issues surrounding disability:
A Is For Autism By Tim Webb (UK) 1994 15mins
A series of portraits drawn by ordinary children is followed by a second sequence of drawings by autistic children: a visual world populated by street lights and street scenes;
very detailed and precisely-drawn trains and cars; spinning coins and records; calendars; bright doorknobs; water trickles; and multiple perspectives stairways, buildings, tunnels and railtracks, with people largely absent.
|
|
Some live-action images are interspersed with the drawings. To these images, children and adults narrate their experiences of autism, their thoughts and feelings, describing how they perceive their lives and the world. To quote a few:
My hearing and eyesight was like an untuned television.
I cannot take the rhythmic pattern of conversation and often interrupt.
I was always obsessed with time.
I asked the same question over and over again because I liked the sound of the answer.
I like spinning a coin as I can concentrate and I don't have to hear the deafening noise of people speaking.

Thursday's Children By Lindsay Anderson and Guy Brenton (UK) 1954 21mins
Thursday's Children is a remarkable and touching study of a class at
the Royal School for the Deaf in Margate, which won an Academy award and was nominated
for a BAFTA.
One of the films directors, Lindsay Anderson, was one of the founders of
the British 'Free Cinema' movement and went on to direct acclaimed films such as
This Sporting Life, If...and O Lucky Man!
|
The film is compassionately narrated by Richard Burton and uses some excellent
camera close-ups allowing viewers to witness the intimate relationship between teacher
and child. The close-ups also allow a profound glimpse into when the children begin to
be aware of what sound is, before they are even able to articulate words themselves. As
a third party, we are enveloped into their joy of discovery.
Anderson uses his skilful observational eye, highlighting a compassionate
observation of people that runs throughout his oeuvre. He says:
No film can be too personal. The image speaks. Sound amplifies and comments. Size is irrelevant.
Perfection is not an aim. An attitude means a style. A style means an attitude.
Implicit in our attitude is a belief in freedom, in the importance of people and in
the significance of the everyday.

Land Of Silence And Darkness By Werner Herzog (Germany) 1971 85mins
In this astonishing documentary about the world of the deaf-blind, acclaimed director
Werner Herzog (Signs of Life, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Fitzcarraldo, Grizzly Man)
explores the life of Fini Straubinger, a remarkable and kind-hearted 56-year-old deaf
and blind woman who has dedicated her life to helping the similarly afflicted.
From their first flight on an airplane to a day at a petting-zoo,
Herzog captures the joys and struggles of those who have been isolated from the world around them.
|
|
Land of Silence and Darkness is an important testimony of those people who have lived in the land of darkness (blindness) and silence (deafness).
It is a tribute to the triumphant nature of the human spirit and a glimpse into an existence so intense and abstract that at times it seems to reach great lyrical heights. Herzog also provokes the viewer into contemplating what the world would be like and what thought would be like for someone born deaf and blind and having no concept of sight or speech.
|
|
It shows, amongst many other things, how these people live, how they 'see' the world (notice how language falls apart) and how they communicate. The film is a moving story that delves into questions of being, knowledge and communication that philosophers have been asking for centuries.
Total Programme Running Time : 122 Mins. No Cert
Hull Film would like to thank: Arts Council England, Screen Yorkshire, Hull Screen and
ArtLink Exchange.
Entry £5.00 (£4.50*) £4.00 Concs (£3.50*)
