13th - 17th April 06 - The Fires of Hull Festival

Musicians, promoters and venues in Hull have joined together to stage a new, annual music festival which will take place in the city for the first time this Easter.

The Fires of Hull is a five day event from April 13 -17 focussing on three main venues; Lamp bar, Welly Club and the Adelphi Club - together with a variety of fringe venues such as Zest, Latitude and the Queens. Organisers Matthew Hogg, Alan Jones and Jay Moy are busy scheduling nearly 100 live acts to perform.
Hull has a fantastic musical heritage, said Matthew, which all too often goes uncelebrated.. How many people know, for example, that Rod Temperton who wrote Michael Jackson's hits Off The Wall and Thriller lived in Hull before he hit the big time with Heatwave? Sade's band were Hull lads, Bowie's Spiders From Mars were Hull lads, there's Genesis P Orridge from Psychic TV, Lene Lovich and Wreckless Eric who were both stars on the Stiff label, the Housemartins, Kingmaker, The Beautiful South, Fila Brazillia, Fonda 500, The Paddingtons...
There isn't a music festival in Hull at the moment that puts on a wide range of quality acts, there's a strong tradition in Hull of making and promoting unusual, off the beaten track music and The Fires of Hull will fill the gap where there are no real multi genre quality music festivals. In turn it will help to celebrate and broaden that tradition and ensure it continues.

The organisers of The Fires of Hull intend that the first year will set the ball rolling for even bigger events in the future - as Alan explains:
The summer is packed with music festivals, but the big ones are all rather soul-less and corporate. The Fires of Hull will take place outside of the crowded summer season and we want it to be a more intimate and unusual event - where bigger acts play to smaller crowds and where the music is the most important thing.

We want to make Hull an even better place to live in and establish The Fires of Hull as a different festival where the welcome is warm and where good music is what matters.
Acts already confirmed include Dave Rotheray (Beautiful South co writer and guitarist) with his new band Homespun, Sam Brown (Jools Holland Big Band) with her soaring vocal solo set, Andy Rourke from The Smiths dropping in at Yo-Yo to do a DJ set and whispers of some other very special guests.

The festival will celebrate music from many cultures including folk, samba and reggae, pure pop to more leftfield forms including jazz and dance with events in exciting new world music venues like Caesar's Cafe on Princes Avenue.
There will also be events and workshops aimed at young people to promote the ever growing live music and club scene in the city.

For more information - or to get involved call 01482 445411 or visit the website www.firesofhull.com

The Fires of Hull is grateful for financial support from Illuminate, a year-long Yorkshire-wide programme of arts events.
