Wednesday 22nd November 06 - Psypher Benefit Gig At The Adelphi, De Grey Street 8pm
|
On Wednesday 22nd November the Adelphi will be holding a benefit gig in aid of
Friends of PSYPHER, an independent group of families and mental health service
users set up to support the work of PSYPHER (Psychosis Service for Young People
in Hull and East Riding). Bands appearing are:
Mug Punter - four piece psychedelic rock band with a touch of Hull thrown in
Gunpowder Plot - alternative rock with a hint of blues
Dirty Rock Quartet - traditional Irish with contemporary feel
Peasants - meaningful, poetic, truthful...
Meerkat - melodic grunge rock from Bridlington
Entry is £3.
|
|
PSYPHER and Jellycat Media aim to empower young people to get on with their lives.
This is another of a series of gigs organized with them which aim to raise awareness
of mental health problems enabling young people and their families to know where to
go and receive help as early as possible.
The gig has been organized with the help of service users, some of whom will be performing on the night.
The night is intended to get people thinking both about mental health issues and different
styles of music as reflected in the eclectic line up!

Some Stats:
|
|
-
Psychosis is four times more common than diabetes in young people
-
In the UK over 100,000 receive treatment for psychosis each year
-
There are about 7,500 new cases of psychosis in England each year
-
1 in 4 people will have a significant episode of mental illness at some time in their lives
-
70-80% of people will get better within 36 weeks of receiving support and treatment
-
Drugs and alcohol are often used to cope or self medicate
-
At present it takes on average 1-2 years between people having psychotic
symptoms and getting effective help.
|
About Jellycat Media
Jellycat Media is a newly registered social enterprise providing multi-media business
services and real work opportunities and workshops to young people aged 14-35 who have
experienced mental health problems.
|
|
Working with partnership agencies, the organisation will offer youth arts apprenticeships
in film and sound recording, web and graphic design and aims to employ participants sat
the end of their training.
Jellycat also provides mental health awareness training, event organisation and
research services, again training up young people to deliver.
It aims to reduce the stigma of mental illness and show that young people, by training and
working in the creative arts can and do get on with their lives.
Jellycat operates in partnership with PSYPHER, Friends of PSYPHER and Creative Connexions.
About PSYPHER
PSYPHER (Psychosis Service for Young People in Hull and East Riding) provides a service
to young people between the ages of 14-35 experiencing a first episode of psychosis.
Philosophy:
|
|
-
Bringing about a cultural shift in how mental health difficulties are thought of and how
services are delivered within the mental health system and the wider community
-
Shifting the focus from what goes on in someone's head to what goes on in their world (contextual focus)
-
Recovery is about getting on with life rather than getting on with life when recovered
Staff come from a range of backgrounds from the traditional to the patently unusual (eg interior design)!
'We believe that it is important to have the 'right people' rather than the 'right training'.
|
Staff have expertise in a range of therapeutic approaches and evidence based interventions but also see
'life activities' as equally important to an individual's recovery.
Activities like snowboarding, football, climbing and creative arts working with artists have often
been the catalyst for change and reintegration into life.
Mental Health Promotion and Social Inclusion: PSYPHER works with Jellycat Media and Friends
of PSYPHER to raise awareness of psychosis through training, events and lobbying for a strategic
partnership approach to achieving early detection/intervention and social reintegration.
