Friday 23rd September05 - Funky Presents Mr Beasley (live)

Funky, the city's biggest monthly event, returns this Friday showcasing Hull's band-of-the-moment, Mr Beasley. An irresistible combination of live party music awaits (funk, hip hop, electro, breakbeat and drum'n'bass), cheap drinks (pints from £1.20) and some proper party rockin' for the band's homecoming gig following their national success in DJ Magazine and Radio 1.

Currently listed at No.1 in Radio 1 One World's Recommended Tunes chart, Mr Beasley's sound fuses electronic beats and samples with organic elements - think Massive Attack and Zero 7 right through to DJ Shadow and Groove Armada. Bringing down drums, guitar, trumpet, effects and live vocals, expect a night of phat beats and pure homegrown dancing music. Funky, a monthly Public Event at Hull Uni Student Union, brings together our favorite international DJs alongside the City's best musicians. Previous special guests include DJs from Krafty Kuts, Fingerthing, the EZ Rollers and the Scratch Perverts, and local groups including Hull Samba Band, The Blue Parrots, The Finger Assassins, The Project and Mambo Jambo (see event pics on the website).

This year sees a brand new 4,000w sound system and a standard drinks promotion of selected pints at £1.20 until 11pm and bottles of Coors (5.2%) £1.20 all night. The event will climax with an hour long DJ set from J-Tee, Winner of the Hull Uni SU DJ Competition, supported by the lyrical freestyling of Lydon (aka MC Danger), resident at Funky at Shinobi. Introducing funky, cutting-edge drum'n'bass to the masses, expect some serious ass-shaking on the dance floor! Entry on the door is £5 before 10pm and £6 after - doors 9pm-1:30am.
