Open Mic Saturdays at Sharkeys

Saturday afternoons just what can you do? Ever since the closure of Gingerman, yes that's right Gingerman- it was never the same as the White whatever- ever since then there has been a gaping hole in Saturdays. For a while there was Biarritz to tempt daytime drinkers then there were a few afternoons of live music at the venue. I went past last Saturday but rock afternoon, in any guise, was nowhere to be seen.

I continued down George Street and headed straight for Sharkeys. This pub has long been a favourite of mine and used to be a must on the Saturday pub crawl. Lo and behold as I walked in I heard the sound of a guitar. My salvation came in the form of a long haired guy entertaining the discerning crowd with some soft rock numbers. This was no accident; Sharkeys have been running an open mic night for some time now.

Jim, from the management team, and Mike Rodgers, of Bottle Rockets fame, are calling on musicians of whatever standard or style to join them on a Saturday afternoon. So whether you play Kate Bush on the kazoo, virtuoso violin or pluck the odd guitar string or two, they want you. Songs about divas or deadbeats it's your choice. There's a free drink on offer for anyone who takes up their challenge.

The friendly sorts at Sharkeys are hoping to create a chilled atmosphere to attract people from all walks of life to socialise and relax. This could be a great way to kick off your Saturday, with drinks promos in the pipeline and other special offers coming soon. Try one of the fabulous cocktails made by the quick, dynamic bar staff; I'd recommend the Cola Cube or the Disco Ball shooter.

Coming Up - Fund Raising Bike Ride From Southport To Hornsea - 30th May 05 By Andrew Steele
