19th October - Hull Trinity House Celebrates 200th Anniversary of Battle of Trafalgar

Hull Trinity House, which can date its origins to the 14th Century, is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar with a lunch on 19th October 2005. The lunch will be attended by the Brethren and 36 boys of the school. This reflects and celebrates the school's opening in 1787, when each of the 18 Brethren sponsored 2 boys to be prepared for going to sea. The lunch will be held in full uniform with the cadets wearing the traditional white uniforms as worn in 1787. The lunch will be preceded by a short chapel service.
The 200th anniversary of Trafalgar will also be marked by the publication of a new booklet, A Hull Man's Account of the Battle. The book is based upon a letter written by Hull seaman Abraham Turner which gives an eye witness account of the battle. Turner was born in 1775 and was a member of the class of the first 36 boys to enter Trinity House. After his schooling he became an apprentice on board the Hull Packet which was involved in the port wine trade. In 1796 he volunteered for the Royal Navy, serving as an able seaman. From 1798, after being promoted to mate he served on HMS Marlborough, a 74 gun warship carrying 590 men, chiefly engaged in blocking the French coast.
Turner left the navy in 1800 and returned to Hull, sailing as a mate on a merchant release. However after once more volunteering, he joined HMS Africa in the summer of 1805. The ship was ordered to join Nelson off Cadiz, and Abraham Turner was promoted to mate. The Africa played a prominent part in the battle and Abraham Turner was wounded.

After the battle on Monday 21st October, the weather deteriorated rapidly and the subsequent storm was according to one sailor the worst hurricane I ever saw. By 26th October many ships were damaged by huge sea and the HMS Africa came close to being lost, suffering a snapped mainmast and a collapsed mizzenmast.
The Africa sent out distress signals and HMS Conqueror came to her assistance, taking her safely into Gibraltar. The crews were rewarded for their success at Trafalgar, Turner himself receiving £200.

A Hull Man's Account of the Battle costs £2.50 and is available from Trinity House.
