Monday 27th June - Make Poverty History Humber Bridge Mass Cycle Crossing and Rally by Bryan Berue

When Bob Geldof announced Live 8, the London gig set up to promote the Make Poverty History Campaign aimed at the G8 leaders with the tickets distributed through a text competition which received over a million entries by the end of the first day, I knew I had to do something to stand up and be counted, but what?

I had already planned to go to Scotland for the G8 conference at the Gleneagles Hotel but alas, I couldn't get a room so I will have to make do with a friend's sofa in Edinburgh - although I don't expect much sleep after what could be one of the biggest parties ever staged.
Will there be a million people there, who knows? But I bet if you tried to book a coach or train ticket to Edinburgh for the 1st or 2nd July you would have a hard time getting one although Martin Deane may still have some coach tickets left.

The second coach is over half full and tickets are selling rapidly so if I were you I'd make that call sooner, rather than later!
With events planned for London and Edinburgh I got to wonder what was happening in Hull. There didn't seem to be anything, until I spotted during a Googling session that a team of cyclists from Edinburgh were planning to bike between the two capital cities and were passing over the Humber Bridge on their way.

The Africa Team, so called because they have been cycling through Tanzania and Kenya over the past two weeks, will arrive at the Humber Bridge on Monday 27th June. The Africa Team have spent their time in Kenya and Tanzania visiting aid projects set up by, among others, Christian Aid, Cafod and Vetaid before returning to this country to convey stories and messages from the people they have met whilst in Africa including the Tanzanian leader, President Mkapa.

So instead of them crossing the bridge and going straight through to Beverley I decided to invite them to Hull, which just happens to be the fourth largest city in the country in terms of bicycle ownership. The team accepted our invite and will be coming through Hull on Monday 27th June.
Cyclists from all over Hull and the East Riding are being urged to meet at the Humber Bridge, 9am that morning bringing along whistles, bells, horns, windmills, banners etc and join the 21 riders of the Africa team in a noisy crossing of the bridge, along Hessle Road and into the city centre for a rally/party in Queen Victoria Square at 10:30 am where they will be welcomed by drummers, with performances from Indogo (evocative singer/guitarist duo), Dave Berriman (Spanish guitar) and others to follow. A short play will be performed by the Africa team to illustrate the plight of the world's poor.
If you can't make the cycle ride come to Queen Victoria Square and watch the cyclists on the Big Screen as they cross the bridge and travel into the city centre. The event will continue into the afternoon with other activities in Queen Victoria Square including the signing of a banner and white ribbons to be delivered to the G8 protests in Edinburgh. Come and add your voice to the hundreds of thousands expected in Edinburgh city centre and show that Hull cares.
Buy a raffle ticket, the top prize is two tickets to see Hull City AFC V Bolton in a pre-season friendly match (other prizes to be confirmed). Tickets cost just 50p each and will be available from Hull College Students' Association reception at The Mutiny on the Bounty building (behind Hull College) and Queen Victoria Square on the day. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to Swanland Primary and High School in Kawangware, Kenya.

As the Africa team exit the city at 11:00am pupils from Hull schools will be turning out to wave off the cyclists as they travel along Beverley Road en route to York via Beverley.

So, if you want to make a difference and add Hull's voice to the MAKE POVERTY HISTORY campaign come out make a noise, enjoy the party and Make History.

For further information about the event telephone Bryan Berue, Hull Organiser on: 0779 088 3802 or 01482 470 197 evenings or email bryanberue@hotmail.com

For a seat on the Hull bus to Edinburgh call Martin Deane on 01482 471467. Ticket prices are £18 concessions, £22 full price.
