Exhibition - 22nd March to 2nd April - TRANSIT by Michael Day at Timebase Gallery, High Street, Hull
|
Hull Time Based Arts would like to invite you to a new audio visual installation ...
Transit by Michael Day
Preview 6 - 8pm Monday 21st March... all welcome
Exhibition runs from 22nd March - 2nd April
Timebase Gallery, High Street, Hull
11am - 5pm FREE (closed Easter weekend)
|
|
My recent work has been concerned with randomness in the everyday environment, and while resident
at Hull Time Based Arts, I have become interested in the movement of traffic over the bridge
behind the gallery (Myton Bridge).
|
|
|
The constant flow of freight and people over the bridge seems
to have no predictable structure or pattern, although each transit has in common the
experience of the traveller being raised above the water, being held above the city for a moment or two.
These momentary journeys over the bridge, with unknown start or destination, have formed
the basis for the work I have done during the residency.
|
The traffic data controls a computer system which randomly displays and montages images,
and generates a randomly composed soundtrack, producing a construction of disorienting
visuals and sounds that reflect the unplanned negotiation of an unfamiliar environment.
The piece has been designed to be downloadable from the internet, so that visitors are
able to view it on their own computers.
When the data from the traffic is exhausted at the end of the two week exhibition,
the piece will conclude both in the gallery and in its downloadable form.
|
Michael Day was born in Reading, Berkshire, and first used a computer to make images in 1985.
He moved to South Wales in 1993 to train at UWCN, and since the mid-1990s has practiced
as a new media artist.
He has collaborated on performance projects in Edinburgh, Cardiff
and Aberystwyth, and has exhibited his own work in venues in Sheffield, Cardiff, and the south west.
He currently teaches New Media at the University of Glamorgan.
