Emerging Artist in Residence Berit Hummel is an interdisciplinary artist whose work to date includes several exhibitions and collaborations, which have been shown primarily across Germany. Her installations often require detailed preparation like choreography, drawings or producing some kind of costume or uniform. "At HTBA I plan to produce a video installation based on a performance in Hull City Centre. The idea is to use a foyer in the city to stage a subtle performance by a person in a service costume carrying out very small actions, like just passing spare time, but at the same time being obviously at work.

The foyer for me represents a kind of transition space between private and public sectors, showing off to the outside and at the same time serving as a point of selection as to who is allowed to enter and who is not. One focus of my work is a staging of acts that are seemingly incidental and without purpose, as if leading towards nothing but a blank space behind the action. In working with public space I'm interested in the relation between private and public."

Emerging Artists: The emerging artist residency programme offers a development bursary to new and upcoming artists, providing them with the opportunity to develop work over two weeks and present it in a gallery context for a further two.
