Coming Up
Last Updated: 31/03/2005 14:05:04
31st March - Hull Art Lab Official Launch
At 53, Humber Street, Hull, E. Yorkshire - 6pm

HAL is a new art organisation that will enable and facilitate the development of contemporary art through a diverse programme of events, residencies, exhibitions, seminars and screenings to excite, surprise, challenge, question, provoke, inspire and entertain.
Miles Thurlow is our first artist in residence from March 16th for one month. You can view his work in progress at the Launch.

The creative process is usually not seen by the viewing public, as most galleries and art institutions insist on presenting so-called finished works for exhibition.

The idea of art existing throughout the process of its creation, regardless of whether it results in a quantifiable object, is integral to its de-commodification.
Miles Thurlow's practice sits comfortably in this, sometimes, uncomfortable space. His sculptural installations, responding to place and architecture challenge our notions of space, commodity, and ultimately art as object.

Inconsistency and double negatives abound in Miles Thurlow's practice. Acts of undoing create an artwork that moves across ontological definitions, with the work complete at and between all points.
From Not Nothing, an essay by Lisa Le Feuvre. Published Art Editions North in Workplace' 2004

Miles Thurlow lives and works in Newcastle.

Also at the launch Sunderland based artist Tim Brennan will be performing A Red Shoe Diary.

Using his own personal diary from his walk from Jarrow to London, Brennan invites the audience to contemplate what resistance might mean in the current climate.
This is a performance which revolves around a shoe that once belonged to Ellen Wilkinson, leader of the 1936 Jarrow Crusade.
