Thursday 1st December 05 - Bob Geldof at Hull City Hall - A Preview contd
By Steve Rudd
Prev Page |
Bob wasn't a politician, and yet here he was, putting his heart and soul on the line like a man possessed, single-handedly making more of an effort for these African people than many governments in the well-off Western world appeared to be doing. He was on a roll, sickened by how some people could stand on the wayside and let these people die.
An almost instant transformation had occured: Bob Geldof was the ultimate humanitarian.
And the Band Aid single was only for starters, as Bob soon came up with the idea of staging a massive live event that would be simultaneously broadcast on TV and radio right around the world, employing the talents once again of the biggest names in the world of music. Even now the sheer scope of Bob's efforts sends a shiver down my spine and brings a tear to my eyes.
Live Aid went down in history as a truly unforgettable day and raised another huge amount of money...
and all for the most essential cause in the world at that time. Even since Live Aid, Bob has gallantly continued his work in Africa, working with African people on a personal and practical basis.
The past twenty years has also seen Bob release four solo albums, but his music has somewhat been
overshadowed by his charity work, in much the same way that Michael Palin is perhaps more well-known these days for his epic TV travels than for his former career as a serious comedian.
Bob has also had a tough private life to contend with, but those demons are best left to rest.
More recently, Bob has dominated the public eye again in light of his plea to help Make Poverty History.
This resulted in the huge Live-8 event, designed to coincide with the G-8 summit in Scotland during the Summer of 2005.
For all the awareness that this event did raise, the highest of the high-ranking politicians are still collectively reluctant to alleviate the astronomical debts of the Third World. To them, money-making is more important than life-saving in some quarters.
That's why Bob Geldof remains such an important and respected figurehead, for he dares to challenge politics.
He might have shouted Give us your fucking money to the nation during the Live Aid extravaganza, but only because he wanted our money to be selflessly channelled towards a greater cause.
He wanted justice, and for money to get to those who needed it most in the world, just so they could preserve the tiniest shred of self-dignity. By staying alive, and by then being able to contribute to the circle of kind-hearted humanity that could flood the world, if only the greediest people realised that money isn't everything.
Such as life, famine is a very real threat on a daily basis for millions of Africans, spread right across the massive continent. As Christmas 2005 fast approaches, news of famine in Niger trickles through slowly but surely.
Thankfully, Bob Geldof showed the world what can be done when we pull together. He was right in believing that a great many lives could be saved, and they were... and many more will be in the future, both because of Bob and people like him.
So, if you've been in any way inspired by the work of Bob Geldof (whether it be concerned with
so-called charity or music, or indeed both) then his show at the Hull City Hall on Thursday December 1st has to be witnessed in the first person.

Drum n bass creeps up from your feet to your fingaz and puts a smile on everyone's face...
I am aware of the genre drum n bass or d n b as it is commonly referred.
A good few years ago I stayed by my radio all night to tape the Bristol pioneer Roni Size playing live on air.
I watched with interest a docu-road movie on LTJ Bukem and the antics of MC Conrad.
The show ended up with the
