Tuesday 19th April 05 - Self-Build by Miles Thurlow at Hull Art Lab

Hull Art Lab is pleased to present Self-Build by Miles Thurlow Preview: Tuesday 19th April at 5pm Artists Talk: Tuesday 19th April at 6pm HAL will also be open on Wednesday 20th April from 10.00 - 18.00 for the last chance to see the work before it is destroyed.

The culmination of an intensive month long residency at HAL, Self-Build , by Newcastle based artist Miles Thurlow, will exist as a finished work for just 24 hours before it is demolished. A huge steel frame and glass architectural structure coated in thick bituminous paint, Self-Build borrows heavily from the modular systems of Minimalist sculpture, Modernist architecture and contemporary design. Built to the proportions of the artist's body, the work is deliberately divisive, forcing the viewer to reflect upon their physical presence and raising questions as to accessibility, social position, aspiration and failure.

Created specifically for HAL, Thurlow's work finds resonance in an industrial city undergoing a process of dramatic regeneration and the promise of pseudo warehouse style loft living. For more information please contact: info@hullartlab.org www.hullartlab.org
