Saturday 17th September - Anti War and Terrorism March and Rally - 12pm Queen Victoria Square
Hull trade unionists to take a position on the War on Terror
The brutal killing of a Brazilian worker by British police, in the aftermath of the failed suicide bombings in London, woke me up. It made me realise that the people of this country have to stand up not only to the bombers but to the maniacs whose policies produce the bombers.
In the media frenzy and political posturing which took place following July 7, I felt unrepresented, squeezed between two sets of nutters.
What could I do on my own? As it happened, I wasn't on my own. I am an active member of UNISON in Hull and I could try to mobilise my union as a first step.
I wrote a motion, found a comrade to second it and presented it to my union branch on August 22. The motion condemned the killing of innocent working class people, of all races, in the various outrages since September 11 2001.
But it also condemned the notion of a War on Terror, that terror cannot be rooted out by brute force,
that the conditions which create terrorists have to be addressed.
This is where Bush and Blair have so brazenly and cynically tried to pull the wool over people's eyes.
Has anybody ever seen or heard them taking time for a little introspection, to consider, openly
and honestly, why terrorists exist? Of course not - to do so would put the spotlight on
their policies and on the economic order they exist to defend.
So they are happy to keep playing hardball, spouting off about defending freedom and democracy and hoping their cheerleaders who own the media are herding everybody into line behind them. And if a few more suicide bombers slip through, it doesn't really matter so long as the corporations are making their profits (destroying the world in the process).
The only way we, the people, can escape this madness is by organising ourselves, and the trade unions are the best vehicle for working people to rally behind.
I am a little ashamed that it took an incident in London to shake me into action, when my brothers and sisters are being slaughtered in their thousands in Iraq and Afghanistan but better late than never.
Happily, the August 22 meeting of Hull City UNISON overwhelmingly endorsed the motion
(two out of 16 voted against) and a subsequent meeting of five trade unionists set a date of
September 17 for the march and rally. The slogan for the event is No to war, no to terrorism.
Now the hard work begins. The state of trade unionism in Hull is not too healthy at the moment and it will be a lot of work for a few people to ensure that everybody who needs to know about September 17 does get to know. If anybody is interested in helping they can contact me on my work number, 01482 318484.
What do I hope can be achieved by the event?
A large attendance, confidence boosted by people coming together and a realisation that we
can change the world for the better.
If it brings a few more people into action, brings new blood into the local Stop the War Coalition,
local union branches and interests more people in the ideas of socialism, I will be happy.
Yours fraternally,
Rob Rooney - Hull City UNISON shop steward
