Wednesday 12th January - Hull Time Based Arts - Currents Lecture
|
|
He Heard a New World: The Legendary Joe Meek by John Repsch
|
Wednesday 12th January
Lincoln Uni, George St Campus Hull
6 - 8pm FREE
|
Joe Meek was Britain's first independent pop record producer and one of the most important figures in Sixties popular music. Hated by his rivals for his secrecy and success, he paved the way for the thousands of independents who followed.
The lecture will be given by John Repsch, writer of The Legendary Joe Meek.
Repsch's busy career as an actor was side-tracked by the Meek biography project, and he has
since written about pop music and environmental matters for several newspapers and magazines,
and made many radio appearances. He is also a fervent campaigner with Friends of the Earth.
|
|
|
In his lecture, he will explain how it was Meek's early childhood and subsequent
personality complexes that led to his becoming a pioneer of record production techniques
but ultimately to his destruction. The talk will be illustrated with slides and some of
Meek's recordings, both well-known and obscure.

It's August, but the adverts already bawl,
Come, consume this festive Yule!
Why be different? Follow that trend,
And get to the shops to spend, Spend, SPEND!
To get the kids something fantastic,
Don't stress with wonga, just flash ya plastic.
