Coming Up Community Event
Dipping Your Toes Into The Internet - thisisUll.com in Association with Hull DOC & Parents Online Saturday 20th November from 12pm until 4pm Spring Bank Community Centre
Ever felt out of your depth? Can you surf the web, do you paddle on the edges or do you pluck up the courage, jump in and immediately start to drown?

The Internet is a wonderful thing. It opens doors and educates. It provides ways for us to communicate which are almost beyond belief.

So why is it that so many of us as parents have little idea what's going on out there in the big WWW Internet world?
It seems that although we've heard about dangers and wonders on the web, some of us are a little nervous to try it out. Maybe it's time you did! Some of us think we'll never understand all that alien jargon or we can't type or we never were good with things like that (like VCRs, DVDs, Microwave Ovens).
So how can you hope to understand what's good and where to find it or how to avoid what's not so good? Maybe you know someone who'd really love to know what's going on out there but is too afraid to ask? Maybe you are that person!

thisisUll.com is all about providing a platform (or diving board!) for everyone in the communities across Hull and beyond, to contribute their views - it's the ordinary people who have the stories to tell.
If you're reading this you probably know already that all of the stories, poetry, articles and reviews which are published on thisisUll.com are contributed by ordinary people who feel they'd like their voice heard. But you need some basic skills before you can do that.
We support the idea of making the Internet accessible to all, so we're keen to help as many people to get online as we can. And here is an opportunity for anybody to come along and try!
We're planning a free event in association with Hull DOC for anybody to come along and learn how to access the world of the internet in fun and interactive ways. Under the banner Parents Online, this event is about encouraging people with little or no knowledge of the Internet to come and get a taste of what it is all about, and more importantly to catch-up with what their kids are learning at school on such matters.
We'll show you how to get online, how to set up an email account, how to use a search engine and also guide you with hints and tips about safety in the net - to help protect yourself and your children from some of the dangers and what to avoid.
We're holding the event on Saturday 20th November from 12pm until 4pm, when we hope you'll have some time to come and join in. There'll be things to keep the kids busy, while you can access the basics of the Internet and community media.
It's a bit like learning to swim - even if you can doggie paddle you stand more of a chance than if you can't! So, come on in, the water's lovely!

If you're interested in coming along to this event, please email if you can event@thisisull.com, otherwise just come along at midday on 20th November.

If you belong to an organisation which would like to take part in this event, or as an individual would like to help out on the day, please contact Cilla cilla@thisisull.com or Mo mo@thisisull.com
About Hull DOC
The Community Development Company Limited, otherwise known as Hull DOC, is the biggest community development company in the country. Along with our other charitable organisation Community Focus we work throughout Hull and the East Riding, on a wide variety of development projects.
Community Development is about change in society, in communities, in groups and individuals. It is about the way in which change is brought about. We work from people's experiences; their own stories of pain and joy as they express them. This takes time and trust and, given these, builds confidence and a sense of self-worth and possibility of change.

We work to enable people and communities to take control of and own responsibility for their won lives and the life of their community. We will work with them to tackle the causes of social injustice shown through poverty, ill health, poor housing, non-participation, etc.

We are therefore concerned with the transfer of power to those who have little or none in local communities. Those who have power will need to enter genuine power sharing with those who do not. Community development is about the creation and support of ways and means, as well as practical initiatives, which enable real participation and the possibility of on-going challenge and change. We also work directly with institutions which hold power to achieve these changes.
