Coming Up - at Red Gallery - August to December 2004
|
Amy Marletta - Over The Top
Wednesday 4th - Saturday 28th August at 12.45pm
|
Amy Marletta studied Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee, specialising in Time Based Art.
Since graduating in 2002 she has exhibited in various galleries, including
The Changing Room; Stirling, and Emerged; Glasgow. She also received the
Dundee Visual Artist Award '04.
|
|
Marletta's recent work involves using a range of materials and techniques, such as painting, drawing and collage. She is mainly interested in working onto and with domestic materials such as curtains, blinds and furniture and using vibrant enamel, gloss and spray paint.
I started to paint onto different surfaces to escape from flatness and restrictive edges. By experimenting with different materials including thread, fringes and pins, I try to extend these works beyond their edges creating a sense of movement.
|
|
Marletta is creating new work for RED gallery, using the structure of the gallery space as a keystone from which the lines and edges will grow. Drawer fronts that are hinged together sit zigzagged across the gallery floor. Paintings and drawings are extended from their surface, letting lines and pattern continue beyond their edges, and creep from one room to the next.
Using colour, pattern, and intricate motifs, Marletta unifies the gallery space and creates a loose maze through which the viewer can wander to create an almost limitless sensation that the work might gradually leap out beyond the gallery's confines.
|
|
Introducing haphazard materials along the way, Marletta creates an environment that curls and meanders into illogical yet striking conclusions.

My work explores the realm between art and the commercialisation of the aesthetic: an area between the production line and the unique.

A whirly gig installed in the centre of the gallery, washing lines stretching between the gallery walls.
Hundreds of polythene bags containing all photographic prints she has made over the last 5
years, including previously exhibited work as well as momentous failures that never made it out of her studio.

Group Show by Jason Dee, Helen McCrorie, Patrick Jameson, Kim Mckinney
January 2005
|
This Glasgow based group has been exhibiting together since 2001. Their work is linked by complimentary themes formulated through similar research based,
experimental studio practices. Compromising video, photographs, drawings and sculpture, the work is concerned with the interrelationship between self and
environment and how we negotiate our surroundings.
An invigilation show is planned for September and IAS seminars are held in connection with most shows.
