PRESS RELEASE - Reclaim the Night - Wednesday 10th November

1 Week and counting...

On the evening of Wednesday 10th November the dark streets of Hull will come alive with a splash of colour, bright lights and music. The Reclaim the Night march organised by residents from the Spring Bank, Beverley Road and Avenues areas of the city with help from Hull DOC, will take to the streets. Weeks of planning will see local residents of all ages and backgrounds coming together to high-light issues that concern them about being on the streets after dark.
Rich Mills, Development Worker with Hull DOC Scullybank Project said, The idea of the march is not only for people to be given an opportunity to voice their concerns about being safe on the streets once it is dark, but also to do some myth busting about how safe the streets actually are.
It is peoples own fears that are the biggest hurdle to overcome, and we hope to have created an event that will bring people out of their houses and from behind their locked doors. By being all together in a safe environment, we hope some of those misplaced fears will be elevated.
The organisers do acknowledge that many of the concerns that are coming forward from the publicity generated by the event so far are true.

However they hope that a group will soon be formed which will either look at ways of tackling those concerns, or putting pressure on those can do something about putting peoples mind at ease.
The march is to meet outside Britannia House on Spring Bank at 6.30pm and will march off at 7.00pm. The route will take in Spring Bank, Princes Ave and eventually end in Pearson Park. The Council have kindly agreed to open The Pavilion so that we can serve refreshments and soup to the marchers. Also in the park there will be live music, fire poi demonstrations, stalls.
Rich Mills said, The park is usually a no-go area after dark, we aim to change this for at least one night. There will be entertainment and activities for all the family both young and old, while people have some soup and a hot drink before they head off home. When people are ready to go home we will have both community transport and walking buses so people will be able to get home safely.
If you have any queries about the event then please get in touch.
