Thursday 18th November - Bricknell Estate Bridging the Gap Project
Bridging the Gap Project on Bricknell Estate in Hull is inviting local parents to come in, log-on and explore
the internet as part of a National campaign: Parents Online Week.
By logging on to the Parents Online website;
www.parentsonline.gov.uk, families will be able to find tips
and ideas on how to use the internet safely and effectively.
A spokesperson for Parents Online said: This year, Parents Online Week, which ran from October 4-8,
focussed on three areas: Helping with Homework, Net Know How and Internet Safety.
Kay Jarvis co-author of Parents First, a book that helps parents understand how to help their children
to learn, and who will be one of the experts participating in Parents Online Week says:
Helping the kids with their homework can be very daunting for parents.
Many parents' own education will have been very different from that of their children perhaps due to
families moving from one country to another, the national curriculum evolving or the role of technology
in the classroom changing.
For others, the days of doing algebra, studying maps or explaining the
periodic table can seem like a lifetime ago or bring back unpleasant memories.
Despite this, those children whose parents are involved with their education often do better academically.
Kay continues, The internet can be of great use potentially, but parents need to know how to use it to help
their children effectively. Parents Online deals with issues of plagiarism, online safety and
Net Know How - which is understanding when to trust the information on the internet.
Richard Mills said: Our event will be running on Thursday the 18th November from 1.00pm to 3.00pm, at the
AB Lodge on Bricknell Avenue and visitors will be able to learn the basics on how to access the internet,
set-up email accounts, and more importantly how to keep their child safe while on-line.
The Learning Shop will also be in attendance, so people will be able to chat to them and find out
about courses and learning opportunities that are available.
