Coming Up Museums and Galleries
Museums and Galleries Month 2004
Hull Museums Launches Superb Series of Free Lectures at the Ferens Art Gallery and Streetlife Museum
To celebrate Museums and Galleries Month 2004, Hull Museums will present its biggest, and most spectacular, series of free lectures at the Ferens Art Gallery and Streetlife Museum.

Organised by the Campaign for Museums, Museums and Galleries Month takes place in May each year with a range of special events and exhibitions in some 1,400 museums and galleries around the UK.

During the month fascinating areas of international, historical and contemporary interest will be opened up to local audiences as part of the organisation's biggest drive to promote the important role of museums and galleries.
The enigmatic story of the Titanic is ever popular, and eight separate slots are available for the lecture, which tells of the great liner's construction and loss and examines the human face of this tragedy through its passengers and crew.

Other subjects include an entertaining look at the history of Yorkshire intriguingly titled The Archaeology of Excrement! with an opportunity to handle some very unusual historical artefacts!

All lectures are free, but tickets must be booked in advance:
May 22nd 11am, 1pm, & 3pm
May 23rd 2.30pm All lectures at Ferens Art Gallery

Titanic, Honour and Glory.
Presentation by Sean Szmalc. The story of this great liner's building, loss, passengers and crew.
May 17th 7.30-8.30pm, Ferens Art Gallery, Queen Victoria Square, Hull.
Frederick Schultz Smith (1860-1925): Mr Smiths Hull

Chris Ketchell, local historian, explores the streets and buildings of Hull's Old Town and surrounding areas in the last two decades of the nineteenth century.

Smith was often commissioned to record buildings and areas of the town which were changing rapidly, due to redevelopment, new road schemes and expansion of the town centre.
Using his drawings as a guide, long lost parts of Hull can be explored; our Old Town's shops, chapels, streets, inns and churches as they were over one hundred years ago.
Gasp in horror when you see how much is gone! Discover lost parts of Hull through these fascinating drawings.

The lecture is free, but admission is by ticket only.

Admission is free but by ticket only. Please contact Ferens Art Gallery on 01482 613902 for more details and to book.
Simon Green Customer Services Manager for Hull Museums said Museums and Galleries month 2004 is our chance to use national publicity to attract new visitors.

I am sure these interesting and fun lectures will offer something to interest most people.
All of the lectures are free in order to make them accessible to everyone and tickets are already being snapped up!
Councillor David Gemmell Portfolio Holder for Quality of Life said The public expects that museum displays will be accurate and informative.

As a result, museum people develop considerable levels of specialist expertise.
It is normally hidden but now, for the first time in Hull, the council's museums are running a series of popular lectures to share that knowledge with everyone.

Space is limited so my advice is book now to avoid disappointment - admission is free!

Please contact Ferens Art Gallery/ Hull Musems on 01482 613902 for more details and to book.
