Tuesday 5th October - The Others and The Morphines at Jaz Cafe Bar
|
The Jaz Bar re-opening night brings a special treat to town:
The Others, about to release their second single Stan Bowles
(Steve Rudd Review) will be headlining.
This is the final tour before promotional work begins for their album due out in January.
www.letskilltheothers.blogspot.com
Support comes from Thee Unstrung, who have played at Jaz before, and
who release their first single Contrary Mary on 1st November.
Thee Unstrung have been described as chaotic rock n roll fun.
Think Oasis and the Small Faces with a bouncy attitude.

Hull's new favourite band The Morphines make up the bill.
It's also going to be the first time new and improved (and it really is) Jaz opens
its doors, which is a happy coincidence!
£5 to get in, Doors at 8pm. Open til 12.

Music Reviews - Biffy Clyro and This Girl at Asylum 24th September 2004 By Steve Rudd, Photos by Darren Rogers
|
|
If only I knew that the gigs at Asylum start earlier than most gigs.
The Asylum, for those that don't know, is all swanky part and glorious parcel of
the Hull University Campus (off Cottingham Road) - and, of-late, the venue has been
welcoming a whole host of incredible talent.
The gigs there tend to start just

Music Reviews - Biffy Clyro At Asylum - 24th September By Andy Dykes, Photos by Darren Rogers
|
|
The cult of Biffy Clyro swirl, pulse and swell like a spring tide while their
heroes rock mercilessly infront of them.
On record, Biffy Clyro are a band whose songs range from the heart wrenchingly
emotional to the jaw droppingly powerful.
But I'm totally unprepared for the sheer intensity of the Biffy Clyro live experience.

Music Reviews - 30th August 2004 - Anarchy in Jaz Bar By Kelly Bolder
|
|
It seems at the moment Hull's collection of successful young bands cannot
help but impress.
The line up tonight included 3 Hull bands and 2 other Northern stars.
On a bank holiday Monday in Hull you could be forgiven for thinking
that the places to be were Beverley Road and the Waterfront but you would be

Music Reviews -The Spark, BBC at The Piper, Tom Jackman, Thief, Le Shed, Turismo 21st Sept 04 By Andy Dykes
|
|
When I arrive at The Piper tonight, I'm greeted by my friend Charlotte.
She's here as a photographer, but has also been roped into being compere for the evening.
Apparently, preparations for tonight's show aren't running smoothly.
Absent sound guys and faulty monitors aside, there are cameras everywhere.

Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict a Riot (B-Unique) By Steve Rudd
|
|
There's no sense in beating around any bush: this Leeds five-piece is
one white-hot rock outfit - and it seems certain that these Yorkshire boys
are going to more than ingratiate themselves and their incredibly catchy
music to the masses in the coming few months.
The telltale

The Others - Stan Bowles (Poptones) By Steve Rudd
|
|
These guys have reveled in one hell of a year, going to inspirational extremes in the art of
self-publicity for their Alternative poppy and punky rock 'n' roll band.
The likes of Embrace and The Libertines have long been applauded by fans for
staging secret
gigs in

Single Reviews - Daniel Rachel - Dear Friend (Dust Records) By Steve Rudd
Release Date: September 27th 2004.
|
|
Daniel Rachel, as a style-conscious solo singer-songwriter, is
truly to be treasured. I couldn't recommend his work more, so seek it here, seek it there.
Then slip it on, stand back.. and listen. No, I mean really listen.
Dear Friend is an astonishing song, crisp with twin acoustic guitar-based purity that

Album Reviews -
Koreisch - The Decaying Schizophrenic Christ Complex (Calculated Risk) By Steve Rudd
|
|
This 14-track album is actually a re-release, although it has been remixed
and remastered and so might still appeal to folk who bought this monster the
first time around in the late nineties.
Such folk would have been of the variety that is obsessed with hardcore rock
to manic

Album Reviews - The Clauberg Opera - The Death of this City By Michelle Dee
|
|
Is The Clauberg Opera's foreboding CD title, The death of this city, prophesising the end of Hull?
It could be describing the very nature of urban society where all cohesion is lost to poisonous,
suspicious, insular, ideologies. When does a city actually die?

Three Movements - Electricity Wiped out Heaven (Calculated Risk) By Steve Rudd

If you've got half an hour of your life to spare for this 6-track mini-album,
then good for you - it's nigh impossible to be disappointed by the raving beauty
and dynamic musicianship on offer.
The atmospheric, haunting subtlety of instrumental opener Awaken is so
breathtaking that

Ernest: (Pimps, B**ches and) Superheroes By Elsie Creek
|
|
Ernest have progressed quite steadily in the two years since they formed.
Some bands make a big entrance and disappear just as fast, while others go on for years
wondering why they don't get the recognition they deserve. However; for this
four-piece from Hedon, the hard work is paying off,
