The Incredible Hull - Hull Artists Exhibition at BEST in London - 18th December - 31st January 2005
Hull, where's Hull?

David Bowie meets Mick Ronson in the back room of an East Hull pub in 1974
where they plan the next stage in rock's revolution.
Just like in April 1642 when Hull's great and good plotted over a couple of
pints in the top room of the Old White Hart to refuse King Charles
the First's entry to the city, thereby starting the English civil war.

|
Fast-forward again to 1986 and we find little Norman Cook looping his first
beats in the back bedroom of Paul Heaton's house in West Hull...
|
Welcome one and all to The Incredible Hull!
Yet perhaps more momentous than all these events is the mysterious disappearance from history of
the infamous Incredible Hull recording label that for years people have talked about
in hushed tones.
Did it really exist? What happened to all the money?
Did they really have that many number ones? Did The Beatles nearly sign?
Where did all the gold discs go?
For the first time we scratch away at some of these urban myths replacing them with new ones.
Your guides on this trip are some of Hull's most infamous graffiti artists,
illustrators, painters, designers and trouble makers:
Pinky, Ziml, Eco, Paris, Xenz, Jake, Detour, Spam, Paris Hair and Cloudy.
Saturday.

Pinky has been creating mayhem since he first grabbed a crayon out of the
toy box in primary school.
A founding figure in Hulls infamous graffiti scene Pinky helped place Hull
on the word map of artistic hotspots. Now living in London he is in demand from
a variety of clients including Maharishi, Dior, BBC and The Big Chill Festival who
all want a piece of the Pinky magic.
|
He caused a road block in East London with his first solo exhibition of canvases,
prints and painted apples in May this year.
In October he work took part in the "Arts a Drag" exhibition series at The Dragon Bar in Old St,
East London. The next installment in the story will be the launch of
The Goofballs, Pinky's new children's book!

Spam (Spamdog) born in the 80`s raised in the 90`s.
Went to same school as Nicky Barmby mate! Started painting when he was 15 after
seeing the work of Hull graffiti crews DRA and RFM and thinking
you gotta be an idiot try your hand at that.
Got shot in a nightclub brawl in LA`s over a kebab stall turf war dispute in 1999,
fookin nice won fella! Invited to Bristol graffiti "Walls on Fire"
Jam in 1998 and fell in love with Bristol so much he decided to move there.
|
|
But as someone he met in the street once said Hull, I like Hull, people have got a lot of soul there
He now lives in Japan. He loves Japan. But you can't put Hull down -
it's like a good video game.

Zimulator
Ziml has always a big believer in Hip-Hop - the idea of taking whatever you have to available to you and making something fresh from it. Coming from Hull and having no money made him find ways of getting the best out of the worst, and shaped his approach to creativity.
|
He spent a lot of time refining aerosol paint-mixing in the mid-90's which was a
reaction to having limited resources available, and in turn this led to his
knowledge and understanding of colour.
Currently based in Bristol and a member TCF
Crew he regularly travels to the world famous "Meeting of Styles" paint jams in
Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Finland and Portugal, as well as painting journeys
to France, Sweden, and of course Hull!
He also works as a freelance artist and designer racking up a huge client list
including Virgin Atlantic, Wrangler, Strongbow & Easyjet, oh and he currently has his
own clothing range in a trendy store near you.
